    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

82 430WR jetting

Restored 430WR - engine completely re-built. Trying to get the jetting sorted out....bike seems to want to "run on" after riding the bike on pipe...that is when you let off of the gas the bike is not clean...plug reads good....bike runs good thru all of the jets. Any ideas ?
 
Good baseline jetting would be a: 2.5 slide,40 pilot,480 main,6DH3 Needle in middle clip.Assuming its timed correctly @2.0mm,has a fresh plug gapped at @.018 and there are no obstructions in the fuel tap or line,and all the engine grounds are clean of paint,etc,if it still surges with the throttle closed you might have an air leak.
 
390Dave has given you good numbers to start with. You need that large 480-ish main. Then the motor will control its heat better and won't run on when you close throttle.
 
In that carb I run a Q-8 to R-0 nozzle. This is from 1000-3000 Ft. Run the air screw no more than one turn out, if it's cold out I run the air screw at 1/2 turn. the 6Dh3 needle works very well, the 6F15 works a little better.

I am running those jetts....air leak where ?? I am been playing with the clip, hard too produce race condition around my house....have not had time to get out to track or farm.
 
I really get great results with main jet set with a 430. This even is rich here in Austin. PM me and let me know if you want to meet for riding session here in Austin.

Never understood how one could run a 480. But all bikes are different. I have two 430s set up with 430 main 2.5 slide - 6dh3 needle. I do run my mix a 32 to 1
 
How long are your WOT runs? My 430's, too, would be fine with a 430 main for most uses. But the plug gets dangerously white on long sand washes, for instance. The factory dez racers of the day were often at 500-540, and sometimes they connected a cable choke to run wide open. Jetting depends so greatly on atmospherics and usage, but a 480 with good supporting jetting works well unless altitude is high. Plus, the original poster's question was about run-on. That's lean somewhere, whether from insufficient jet or excess air from sources like a leak. Often on these bikes the main is too small, they build too much heat when worked hard at the larger throttle openings, and the symptom is run-on when the throttle is closed. Natural tendency is to think this is from lean small throttle jetting, like a pilot or slide, because that's where the symptom is felt, but it's actually from heat accumulating in other throttle ranges.

You should check your carb manifold first. The manifold on my 84 250WR had a serious crack that was well hidden. I replaced it from eurodirt on eBay about 4 years ago. If it is original, replace it anyway before you fry a top end
 
BTW - I don't mean to be contradictory to the other guys offering jetting suggestions. GaryM and I have been discussing how different our main jet requirements are, even considering our climates. I just want the original poster to make sure he's giving enough jet for whatever his bike needs!
