• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

82.5 cr 500 factory jetting

I have an 82.5 cr500 it came with a new vm 44 carb in a box (like the rest of the bike )which I have since fitted it starts and idle ok,but I was after the jetting the bike would of had from factory or a good base line for it.

Appreciate any input regarding a 44

many have found better consistency from a vm 40...later husky big bores switched to a 38...i think the 44 is over kill and not worth the extra size....some say its much harder starting and jetting...i run 40mm on my air cooled 500....liquid cooled i run 38

if you check our data section, you will find the specs...husky switched to a 40 in 83 and 38 later on, so does that say something?

Far enough, found nothing in the data section on a vm44 hence my post, I had the 44 so I put it on to start it after putting it together it starts first kick so I am assuming once the slide area gets a little wear or the motor is a little tired they have problems starting ?.

looking on the net vm 40's are not available new is that correct.

I don't think it is which particular carb so much, I think it is more how the bike is used. I think that if you run a 2 stroke hard it will get very hot and needs rich jetting to keep it cool. This same jetting will seem very rich and sputtery if you just go for a short trail ride where the engine does not fully warm up. I think if you search the web you will find virtually every big 2 stroke has jetting issues.
I have a street licensed 1981 wr430 and thought I had the jetting pretty much spot on until I tried to keep up to a couple 600 4 cylinder streetbikes. It got so hot I knew it would put a hole in the piston if I did not slow down.
I have no experience with the 44 mm carb but with the 40mm carb (which I believe has the same slide) one thing you may not notice until you go for a long ride and get tired is that the slide is a big chunk of brass and very heavy and results in a heavy throttle pull. I used a grinder to grind the return spring thinner which helped a little.

I have one of those carbs in my collection off exactly the same thing. It appears to be just the same as the 40mm one but bored out where the air goes. The bikes came with an owners manual and a card. The card is what would have the size of the idle, needle, pilot, main, slide maybe someone with the card will see your post. The mono shock carbs are shorter and I think only had 38mm on 500 (488) bikes the last year xc 1987. what is in yours? air jet, needle, needle jet, needle position, slide? Did I miss anything? I probably took most of my jets out and put them in a tuning kit if they were different than what I was using at the time.

Here you go

That sure looks like the card I was referencing. Since the carb in question is new it might have been set up for that bike. Sudco seems to do business that way, they won't tell you anything about jetting but will set up a new carb purchace for the application at hand. What is mine a 1982 3/4 it had a six speed in it.

Thanks husky250mag that's what I was after much appreciated, and the input from you other guys as well, it has a 35 pilot 7f7 needle with a 320 main at the moment.

Ran it on our car chassis Dyno this morning at work it was way lean so that makes sense I will get some jets and needles and have a play with it thanks again.

I would remove the needle jet by tapping with a drift from the float bowl side and see what that is as the other things I noticed are not very similar sounding to what is on that card.
