  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Does anyone know if a steel tank off a 83 model will fit a 84 model ?

Thanking you all in anticipation

Don't see why not. You will need to use the 83 left side panel however. Seat is longer on the 84 also I think so it may not work with the 83 tank. Hopefully someone will know for certain on this forum.

Keep in mind the wr/xc tank is larger than cr (at least for 500 I believe) and that comes with longer steering stops so it doesn't get dented by the fork tubes.

:eek::eek:.....:thumbsup:********************************************************************************!
Thanks again ****************************************

bigger tank is slighlty wider for 83. 81-82 vs 83 petcok is diff as shown 83 more foward. seat is snug for 84 on 83 but same seat base.

A) The tanks in question are not steel
B) What I was alluding to without checking the smaller displacement bikes probably don't get the larger tank no matter what letter suffix they have. Upon opening the 1983 parts sheet the 125 and 240 all use the same tank as the cr for the 250 and 500. There is a wru and wre in the 430 and one gets larger one smaller look for yourself.

Just about finished a 84 xc 500 , complete rebuild new everything , tried to post a pic of before but it was 'to big' that stuffed me , Im not to flash with computors, will try in a few weeks once finished
and will try the 83 tank off a friends to see if it will work

It is the Right hand side panel that will not fit - between 83 and 84 model years.

The 84 seat is 1'' longer in the nose, but they will go on. Remember that all of the 82 / 83 Alloy tanks suffer from the seam at the back (where the seat rubs) from wearing through and leaking. Always re-weld this seam before putting the tanks in for paint! We weld around the petcock threaded bush too - as these have been known to come out. Make very sure that the exhaust is clear of the bottom of the tank too...

different part number stamped near the right side front bolt rubber grommet hole.
82D195 is 10 liter 2.7 gal for us
82E194 is 13 liter 3.1
tough to tell them apart unless sidew by side but the 83 vs. earlier petcock differeence is easy to see stand alone.

If anybody is interested in one of these big tanks I have one. I bought it with the idea of using it on my 82 restoration, it was painted in primer and didn't realize that it was bigger. I planed on polishing the sides and Painting it. I started striping the paint and realized that there was some bondo where the polished sides would be so I stopped as it wouldn't work for me. However if it was to be painted White it could probably be made nice. It would need to be striped down to bare Aluminum and restored I'd let it go for $100 plus shipping, I paid more than that for it.
