  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

83 CR 500 Suspension Issues

A Class
I am having and issue with the front forks as well as the rear suspension. Last year I took apart the front forks to clean then and replace the seals and oil and after I put them back together they are now for lack of a better word sticking. I have taken them apart to clean them since but they continue to be sticky and are not smooth when they decompress.

As for the rear suspension I have taken them apart to replace the seals on those as well and now they are bouncy. It is as if they are not dampening at all. Any hints as to what my problem could be would be appreciated.

Rear: Improper reassembly or you just didn't get all the air out.
Front: Probably misaligned at the front axle.

Or one of the fork tubes are slightly bent.

When i reassembly forks i always leave the upper triple clamp bolts loose & the axle nut slighty loose. Then take the bike off the stand & pump the fork up & down a few times, then gently put it back on the stand, tighten everything after.

Dont forget that the damper cone must be centred in the bottom of the fork slider by removing springs, loosening of the damper rod bolt underneath and bottoming out the fork tube before tightening the rod bolt up. This centres the damper rod and bottoming cone which can cause stiffness and stiction if its out to one side.
The other issue is the front axle setup puling the fork legs in "pidgeon toed". As stated by Husky John above, loosen all the axle clamp and nuts off, i thump the front end up and down as much as possible to allow it to settle in the central spot then carefully do up the pinch nuts then the axle nut. If you can , back spin the wheel, jam the front brake on then do up the axle nut holding the front brake on hard. (standard field operating procedures for a Husky!)
If these dont fix it, youve got a physical issue to sort out.
