  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

85 250 CR not shifting properly

So I've just put my engine back together after a little accident with the piston and cylinder. New cylinder, head and piston are in place, and the engine runs fine now.
However now it won't shift properly. The shift lever doesn't return to the center by itself and while riding really I can only get it into first and 2nd gear. With a lot of effort I can get the higher gears in but it takes a lot of fiddling with the lever.
So obviously something is wrong... It worked fine before this little accident though.

I have had the clutch cover off and I suspect I either put something back in the wrong way, or I am missing something.

The guy that I bought the bike from mentioned something about it having this same problem when he bought it, the engine had newly been put back together then. All he had to do was put a spring in correctly and it was fine after that. And it was actually working fine when I bought it so I suspect that whatever is the cause is something that is underneath the clutch cover, and not inside the case halves. I haven't had it apart and hoping to avoid having to do that because that'd mean I have to order gaskets and what not and the season will be over by the time I got it back together.

So here's the return spring he was talking about.. This pic is not my bike, it's my friends 86 400 WR, but it looks the same as mine with the spring being in the same position and the legs around the "pin" down there. My spring was slightly bent though, which might have something to do with it not working properly.
I'm not sure I understand the spring's function, can't really figure out how it helps the lever return to the center.

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated!

I can answer my own question.. Went out to take a look at it again and it all became clear. My spring was bent just enough for the pin in the cover to end up outside the spring, so the spring only worked one way at best. After giving the spring back its correct shape it's working fine now :)

When you are about to fit the clutch cover - push the 'kicker' mechanism rearwards - so the dowel pin on the casing goes between the two ends of the spring. This is normal.

I had the same problem. It turned out the Pin in the Clutch cover was to short, I just thought it was an alignment pin for the cover itself and didn't understand that it did more than that.
