  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

87 XC500 IGNITION TROUBLE (I NEED SOME HELP)

troublemaker

Husqvarna
A Class
Houston we have a problem.I was out riding my Husky and after a few laps the bike started acting like i was momentarily hitting the kill switch.I took it back home and i let it sit for a few days.Yesterday I figured I would change the plug and it did the same thing, but it stated to kick back on me.I pulled the ignition cover and flywheel to see if the timing had moved but it is still where I put it.I then looked at the coil and low and behold the damn thing was about to fall off.So I figure this has to be my problem I tighten it up with some lock nuts this time and go to kick it and all it wants to do it kick back on me.I had one of my cr500 honda's do the same thing once and it was the stator, could this be my problem?

Trouble if you use a battery powered strobe and lay the spark plug on the head [ away from the hole of course ] then you should see where it is firing as you kick it over.
Having a mate to kick makes it easier.:)
Or you could spin the flywheel with a socket held in a drill. [ Have done this and it works ok ]

I'm actually afraid to kick it at this point,I don't want to break my cases or my foot.It wont start now, just kicks back.

Check timing with the dial indicator, just to make sure the stator didn't move. It ran fine before, so has to be something simple. Check the mounting plate as well. I use blue lock-tite
on everything.

So would a car style timing light hooked up to a car batt for its power work? just have clamp on the plug wire with a plug in it grounded.

Ok,found the problem.flywheel rubbed through a stator wire and was shorting out every now and then.
Now it runs right but is a bear to start when you let it sit and cool off.I thought I had this timed properly but now I'm not sure if it's correct. My ignition is the (mini 6?) and you check timing with a pin through the flywheel through to the hole in the stator?.When I check mine the hole is way off @ 2.8mm.
Are these mini 6 ignitions engine specific like they made a specific one for each engine?Mine was off my 430 and now on this 500 with a different timing spec than the 430.So the pin deal would only be correct for a 430?I don't see any other way to check timing.

I'm using one off a 250 on my 430, the mounting plate is different. You should be able to set the timing to 2.64mm (factory). I would try 2.4mm, should make it easier to start.

Ok,timing is set correctly @2.8mm,won't start unless you pull it.I'm done with this Motoplat ignition.
I'll save my money up for an aftermarket set up.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for all the reply's.

2.8mm is too far advanced, 2.63mm is factory. .2mm is alot so .4mm should make a BIG difference. I would still try 2.4 before I'd give up.

If you were to find TDC and then put a mark on the outside of the flywheel where you can see it then put a mark on the case so it lines up with the flywheel mark then you could turn the c/shaft backwards so the piston was 2.8 or 2.6 or 2.4 mm BTDC [ I personally like .080" for my 400 ] , you could then put another mark on the flywheel where the TDC mark is on the case.
You could put a little line of white paint on each mark.
Now if you used a battery powered strobe you would know where it was firing because the flash would light up the marks on the flywheel and you could see if it was too far advanced or retarded.
Then in the future you would be able to time your bike easy as .
Cheers
