  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

88 430 XC reed valves

Do Boyesen dual stage reeds make any difference to this model? and do I need them specifically for the XC or will any 88 430 model reeds work? Or any other aftermarket reed valves for that matter

That reed set up is on all the water cooled 250, 430, and 500, the air cooled 500 and perhaps some air cooled 250 don't know about that. The stock has one large pedal and a short wavey pedal where the boyseen has two large pedals but one is kind of inside the other. I havn't got any of the boyseen ones lately so I don't know if they offer a graphite version now or not. If the stock ones aren't frayed they can be turned around and re positioned. I really don't know if they work much differently I have never installed them and stock ones back to back without changing a bunch of other stuff as well. Have to wonder a bit as a lot of reed cages have some way to keep the reeds from going too far which most likely the stock design addresses to a greater degree.

I used Booyesen dual stage power-reeds on 500s and the results were disappointing compared to stock reeds which i reverted back to.
Jetting and tuning was allover the place and nowhere near the outright high rpm performance of stock.
Gave the extra set of Booyesens to a buddy with a 250 and they work well there.
Frankly i think the air/fuel mixture velocity is too much for them on a 500, and likely on a 430 too.
The smaller petals furled quickly and sealing went out the door. Also I think the bottom reed obstructs airflow more than anything else, on a bigbore engine.
Mossbarger manufactures a replacement setup with the cage. Havent tried it but its my next move when the stock ones finally wear out.

i just bought an 86 xc500 and it starts and idles just fine but goes flat from mid to top. it dies when i pull the choke. anyone have jetting recommendations please. mine has the boyesen reeds as well so iwonder if it will be better to go stock.

after going through it this weekend I found the problem in the silencer. it had broke off inside preventing proper exhaust. I pulled another used one out of the boxes of parts I got with the deal slapped it on and she fired on the first kick. It runs amazing if only it were not so hot right now in Vegas.
