• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Aluminum tank clearcoating

Larsa

Husqvarna
A Class
Guys,

Talked to the shop today and my new RED 1981 tank is finished with the white lining and all.

They called to ask me regarding clearcoating..and I had always thought I would only clearcoat the color part and leave the polished sides free. However this will leave a 'step' between the color and bare aluminum of course.

I asked the guys to re-mask the aluminum a couple of millimeters below the white strip so the clearcoat would cover a little of the bare aluminum. They did not want to do this for some /&%¤#" reason so I probably will have to use a small brush to do this myself.

What is your experience on clearcoating the al tanks? All of it, just the paint or like me above?

Thanks
Lars

I did some clearcoating on some polished alu parts and the coat did ALWAYS peel off! You have to make the surface rough so the coat can stick to it!!!

Speedcowboy,

Yep, I did, very close to the white strip I made it slightly rougher then for the remaining side part, which is brushed, not polished. I will use a brush to close the edge of the painted section with clearcoat, just so I won't wear the paint with my knee more then I need (due to the step).

thanks,
Have a nice weekend
Lars

You could look into Standox topcoats. They make a clearcoat that is designed to go over alloy. The clear has SOME etching/chemical adheasion properties, but isn't guaranteed for large areas like billet wheels and things. I have also been playing with a spectrachrome process, that lets me spray "chrome" right over primer or anything else... (it's actually a multi step process that converts a silver wash, kind of like mirror making, but it turns out like chrome.) I did it on a Zundapp KS100 tank, and it looks better than new... Here's a pic, (its dusty) The beauty of it, is that it can be sanded and painted over just like any other paint.

Wow, looks great! Makes me wonder why I paid 800 bucks to re-chrome my puch dixie tank (moped) some years ago :)

I attached a picture of my recently sprayed tank, I spent many hours straigthen dents out of the tank this winter, but It looks nice I think now.
Slightly smaller brushed alu-area due to one side had a very severe dent that came out nice, but not able to get a brushed finished to it.

Now I just need to remember where the heck I stored those husqvarna stickers..

Thanks!
Lars

I used a product called "Bulldog Adhesion Promoter". Recomended by and purchased from my paint supplier, for shooting clear over bare polished aluminum.
Sprays on clear and then I shot clear over the whole tank. It's been about six months and so far so good.

I painted an entire Husky tank with polished aluminum knee panels with catalyzed acrylic enamel clear topcoat and it peeled off only the polished part. I just left it and polish the aluminum every once in awhile.

I restored and painted my Husky aluminium tank myself about 3 years ago...no deterioration so far . Once I had the desired finish on the bare alu side panels I painted them with a product called Glisten PC by POR15 ( 2 part - clear & hardener), can be brushed on but does not leave brush marks. Specially for polished alloys including alu, bonds well to polished surfaces, UV stable, unaffected by diesel, petrol (gas) acids, solvents...I found this product was not the easiest to use, follow the instructions exactly. For more info just google Plisten PC and go from there. Only thing is...I applied the clear first to cover a slightly larger area and then feather edged the ridge, then masked off the alu area & sprayed the colour coats followed by the white stripe and logo decals & finally sprayed a 2 pac automotove clear over the whole lot. Excellent result achieved. Oh, I then cut some clear 3M film to cover the side panels and rear section of the tank where your legs tend to rub the paint off. I do recommend the Glisten PC, in fact the entire POR15 range of products seem very high quality and worth some consideration.
