  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I thought I had everything dialed in for my trip....

Woke up this morning to the smell of gas and a puddle on the garage floor.

Installed last week, rode on Saturday with no issues then started leaking last night or this morning.

This is my second IMS tank.

First tank didn't fit over the mounting stud. Steve at IMS promptly sent a new tank. This one fit but now the leaking problems. Back to 1.9 gal for 60-70 mile stretches has me worried.

got a leak? call steve ASAP. IMS has been very willing to service me. sorry to hear this...

IMS is selling a deficient product and only counting on some of them to not deform and leak. I had 2 tanks as well, both leaked. If I change bikes at some point, I will never buy an IMS tank.

IMS has been having quality issues for at least 5 years. You would think that they would have that sorted by now........

Yeah you would, but it seems that for some reason they don't yet. It kinda sucks for those of us that have a newer Husky and the only other options is the Safari tank or stock. I personally don't want to haul around all the weight of the Safari tank and the stock tank isn't practical.

Steve at IMS is aware of the problem but have not figured out what is causing the problem. Quality control, plastic formula, cooling, gremlins in the factory messing with things, who knows....They are working on another style which involves a metal mounting plate for the fuel pump, but nothing specific for production and this time. I should have asked if they were going to have the tank shroud inserts as well.

Has anyone tried Permatex #2 to try and make a seal? OR anyone know a O-ring manufacturer that could make a taller
O-ring for the fuel pump???? If the diameter were oval instead of round it may make a better seal between the pump and tank.

If they are re-working tanks, let them know it would be highly desirable to leave a bit more room for steering dampers...

Hey Mike.

Yeah I recently put some Permatex #2 around the mating face on the tank (http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/damn-it-ims.18548/page-2#post-164917). I have only tested it sitting there on the bike really as I have not been allowed to ride (broken collarbone). Just today I got the all-clear from the doctor though, so hopefully I will get to ride soon and see if there is a good enough seal. I'll keep you posted.

Perhaps they need to hire/poach someone high up from Clarke or Acerbis. Rarely hear of quality/problem issues from them & I've seen a lot of their tanks in service in the same conditions that the IMS tanks see. Not intending to be critical, but I can't believe they're still selling as many tanks as they do, given all the problems they've had & that it's gone on this long. 5+ years is waaay too long(ie. 4.5 years too long) for the same problems to keep repeating themselves over & over again...

Ya know, maybe it aint my place to say but....screw it, here goes.

I've had issues with every maker, with every product, with just about everything I've ever pruchased. IMS included.

It's what happens after the sale, when you have a problem, that count's.

Steve and Jack stepped up and really went the extra mile to serve ME w/ the carb'ed tank issues, and, I certainly aint no one special. Bet they will others as well w/ the FI tank issues.

Is there an issue with the FI tank? Yes, we know that. We also know they are working on it, they really have their shoulder into it now. Call them for more info.

Other than that, there's too many "bash IMS" threads in here at CH. It's getting a little annoying everytime I log in and there's "another" one, like this one for instance.

They are damn good peep's and they are working hard right now to make it right. Got an issue? Call them. More flies with honey.

That is the feedback I keep reading, over and over, great people.

No, simply stating that a problem is occurring is not bashing. Bashing is more like a hate without reason, or strong negative statements with little or no details. The threads that I've read about the ims tanks seem concise and articulate to me.

Here is one definition of it: Bashing is a harsh, gratuitous, prejudicial attack on a person, group or subject

Maybe we can collect all the IMS issues threads and make a sticky. Sub cat's for FI and Carb'd tanks w/ tips and fixes. Or not...just a thought. Like we did with the 125 and other EFI issues.

Just seems pointless and redundant that we keep flogging this issue in new threads while they are working hard on trying to correct it and some/most haven't even picked up the phone and called them to discuss it.

Just my POV, .02, YMMV etc.

While I am extremely frustrated that my IMS tank isn't working, it's really the only option and I gave it a try knowing the problems that others have had. I had an IMS on my DRZ and was very satisfied with it.

The Safari really isn't an option for me as I think 3-3.5 gallons is about perfect for the Husky, 4.2 gallons + $570 for the Safari is not for my riding.

I give IMS credit for making an attempt at the tank and standing by their product. Again, Steve at IMS has been very helpful and I will consider IMS tanks in the future.

As far as I know Acerbis and Clarke do not nor plan on making a tank for the TE510, why are they not getting bashed for not making one? They see the demand, so why aren't they making it? Probably because it's a difficult bike to make for and don't wan't to be ridiculed online for their attempts.

1 gallon RotoPax on the tail for now....

See ya on the trail.

Mike
