  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Arrow Slip on vs FMF

A Class
Hello,
I am trying to decide what muffler to get for my TE449. I would like to upgrade from the factory muffler but am a little unsure of what to get. It has to be tolerable in terms of loudness. I was originally thinking of the the FMF PC4 with the quiet insert (040671). For about 20$ more I can get an Al Arrow muffler (72616AK). The Arrow is intended for the SMR but should be the same?

Anybody here have an Arrow muffler? How loud is it. What are the power gains like? There does not seem to be a lot of information about it.

Yea I just ordered a buds racing triple clamps. No one I know has them so guess I'll be a guinea pig on those too. It's for a tc250r

IMG_1577.JPG Alright I have had the Barrett installed on my bike for about a month now and feel I should say a few things about it. This muffler was ordered from Barrett Exhaust in Australia. Total cost was 550 AUS$. Paying in AUS$ was a relief as the CDN$ sucks compared to the US$. It is a direct slip on unit. Unfortunately this is the first time I have ever purchased aftermarket exhaust so I don't have a lot to compare it too. This unit was installed on a TE449 w. PCV and race map 3 (later changed to Mojorod map-explained below)

Appearance: This unit in my opinion is deserves praise in this category. The black body suits the Husky well and looks sharp. Different colored endcaps are available with the unit as well. I went with the silver but am sure folks will be interested in the other options including black, gold, blue, or red.

Installation: This was reasonably straightforward as it was just a slip on muffler. I found it considerably easier to bolt in place that the factory one. One thing I would like to note is that it is not built to have a Nomadic rack on the bike as well. Installing the Nomadic rack required sanding of the factory aluminium spacers to get it to fit. It would be nice if they sent a spacer with the unit that would allow for the Nomadic rack.

Quality of construction: Handling the unit makes it apparent that it is very well built. The would classify the fit/finish of the unit to be very good. The muffler is a very sturdy construction. I have had a couple spills since installing it and have yet to damage it. The mufflers are completely repairable.

Design: This muffler is a very simple design. It is basically just a tube with packing. No baffles or wizardry of any kind, just old fashioned packing. The unit comes with a tea strainer style quiet insert or a simple screen insert. This can be accessed by removing the endcap using an allen key. This muffler is deffinately lighter than the factory muffler. I don't have a scale to weigh it (and don't feel like taking it off again) but it seems like about 3/4 the weight of the factory one. I am not sure how a FMF or other muffler would compare here. Maybe some one else here knows the weight of an FMF? I am thinking this unit is a little on the chunky side compared to other set ups.

Loudness: With no quiet insert or screen this unit is surprisingly quiet. I figured that with the simple design and no baffles it would be loud as hell. That is not the case. This unit is really very pleasant. It gives the bike a low almost choppy sound. It growls when you crack the throttle though. Not what I would considered to be obnoxious (and I have always have factory exhaust). The increase in noise is not noticeable if the bike is coming towards you. When it is driving away the increase is more noticeable. I have not heard FMF exhaust before, but it is usually described as being pretty loud. That is not the case with this muffler. The removable screen or quiet insert both do make the unit more quiet. I found that the performance effects of these inserts to be disappointing however.

Performance: Its hard to sum this category up. With no insert in the muffler I fail to see how there could be any back pressure. Its basically a straight pipe. My 4th,5th, and 6th gear became alive when I put this muffle on. Suddenly she screams and higher speeds. Third gear throttle only wheelies are now possible. The low gears are more responsive. With the tea strainer insert in place there is a noticeable loss in power. Its still more than factory but a little disappointing. Almost makes my bike choke is you crack the throttle too fast. The screen insert gives a less noticeable decrease in power, but none the less is noticeable. Its amazing what one little screen can do to screw this engines power band up. With no insert of any kind it is definately at its prime. Not having any insert did cause the bike to back fire heavily at lower speeds though. I later changed my map to "Mojorod" and that cured that issue(thanks Mojorod!).

I ran a Barrett exhaust on my 511 for a few years. Was good and I agree the sound is very nice. I have a full FMF mega bomb on there now and it did add noticeable power but is also on the edge of being to loud.

probably the header but think the muffler is more flow through as well as noted from the sound level.

Did you find that the FMF was lighter?

This makes me want to try a Megabomb header in combination with a Barrett. Maybe the screen used in the Barrett causes airflow drag. I suppose this could be similar to how the flexible venting for a house makes more drag than the straight smooth stuff. Still though the internal screen tube on the Barrett is larger than the size of the actual header pipe.
