• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Auto Engine In Conventional Engine Frame

Husqvarna
AA Class
I have an Auto engine but no frame , I assume it will fit into a similar year conventional gear change frame? I just want to check before I commit as the only other Husky I have owned beside an Auto are 1960 bikes.

What engine do you have? The 420 needs the silver frame with the squashed tube by the left footpeg. The white frames need the 500 auto/430 water cooled. smaller case. Not too sharp on the 360 or 390 but I think I have read on here the early 360 was longer. One project I never completed was to put a 420 engine into an 1988 four stroke frame. It appeaed that all that would be necessary was to cut into the engine case and weld a piece in as to lessen oil capacity a bit and miss a frame tube and make custom swingarm pivot inserts. That is if the back of the engine can take the stresses from the mono shock set up.

I have a 1978 390 Auto frame and the only difference between it and a regular 1978 frame is that it came with ball and cone stem bearings instead of taper roller stem bearings. CR and WR engines will go right into it because the frames are the same ML series frame difference being the rear engine mounts used on the six speed models

There is a difference in the rear mounting tabs between the two different ML 78 frames the one with the Timken will be a longer tab and takes the shorter engine,Husky did that mid year.

What number is on your 390?

I think it is that Bill 502 is talking about ( he send me these pics several months ago, thanks).

That does not change the frame itself, just the engine mounting
There are two different lengths of 390 engines an early and a late, for the 79 frame. The 78 early ML frame has ball bearings steering head and 29 degree rake, the later 78 frame has Timken Bearing and also 29 degree rake for the short motor for the 79 and 80 engine, after that was the 420Auto for 81-82 was also a short motor.

Thanks for all the answers and advice, the engine I want to use is a 2070 which I believe is an AMX version.

If I could find the time Steve I would drop my 6 speed out of the frame and offer up the 390AMX motor I have. Same prefix as yours. My frame is a 78 ML. The only difference my old eyes see is that I need to ditch the swingarm spacer as the rear motor mount just goes through the middle of the arm.
Seems I missed you at Telford on Saturday :(
I spoke to Jef Bens, and he has all the sprag bearings in stock if you need them.

That's the long motor and will fit in the ball bearing steering head frame, You might be able to put it in the Timken Style frame if you change the front motor mounts or make some custom mounts.

Is your frame a Timken or Ball Bearing?

I harvested timken cups from a trash 78 frame to update my early 78 frame with the balls and cones. The 1978 Autos and 125 both used the ball bearings while the WR, XC, & CR all got the ML22000+ frames
