• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Auto questions....

Auto Lover ...
I started to pull down the gearbox on my 390AMX this afternoon. So far, a couple of questions ...
On the end of the main shaft there is the drive engagement dog. The inside of the gear is worn, worse still the teeth on the end of the main shaft are well mullered. How bad is bad ?? To me it looks like I need to replace the shaft and the gear. Are these still available, or is it a question of finding the best used one possible ?

Second ... after lifting the main clutch assembly from the crank, there seems to be a washer missing from underneath it. The manual says there are two needle bearings and a free wheel device. With a washer between the crank and the assembly. Mine is missing. The parts book does not show the number for this ! It only refers to a "gear" of which there is not. Is the parts book wrong ??
I am sure there will be many more questions as I go along.

Grouty worn dogs can cause the transmission to not engage when the lever is released. The NOS shafts are very scarce so you are well advised to keep an eye out for used ones. Can't tell you how bad is bad. You need to test in practice. At least it's easy to pull the transmission apart on an auto! If it looks bad then it probably is cactus though. Also don't leave the bike sitting locked out of drive as the engagement spring tends to sag out. Leave it in drive.

The parts book I have (1978) manual does not show a washer. The 78 owners manual shows a diagram with no washer. I think the 78 doesn't use it.

I however also have a automatic workshop manual (eBay copy which has no year on it nor says if for 360 or 390) which shows a photo of the assembly using the washer - see photo below. The manual shows a bike with a Bing carb fitted so I suspect it is an early model auto - a 76 360 or an early 77 390 before they switched to Mikuni 38mm cabs. I know they changed the design of the first gear clutch drum hub to improve bearing and freewheel life so this may have involved dropping the washer. Dave Pratt of Tritrophy on eBay is a good source of auto parts and knowledge.

I seem to recall George of Up tite discussing repair of that shaft that was expensive years ago. I didn't even know there was an ealier more problematic engagement system than the 420 and later at that time.

For what is is worth by the time they advanced to the water cooled 3 speed the manual still used pictures of the 500 air cooled first gear clutch which had more bearings in it. Ther are a few other instances of earlier pictures making it into manuals I could probably find if I really felt like it.

Good Morning Ian, if your engagement gears are mullered, replace them, Jef Bens has new OS gears and made new shafts which are a press fit into the drum. I have several sets that look sort of okay but will not engage or stay engaged
As PEZBerg said leave the bike in gear, the spring on which it relies on to push the gears into engagement is not very impressive and leaving under compression will not improve matters.
I cannot remember on the washer but I do know that the main clutch drum should have a bit of linear float, , if not it will be locked to the shaft!
A slow tick over and the clutch drum brake functioning all help gear engage and preserve our precious gears. I did think of putting a separate lever to control the drum brake but then remembered why I started riding Autos, only one hand works properly. You can increase the tickover once you are in gear to prevent the bike stalling on the over run.
I have also found my handle bar lever is basically worn out which reduces the throw you can achieve.
If you want to look at disassembled engines or even look inside my engine you are more than welcome to come and have a poke about.
Make a main clutch spring retainer as Michel does for when they break, check these springs thoroughly and replace if marked, removing the source of the marks if you can.
Frank is right, the 420 with it's positive gear change is a better system, but I don't think it will fit earlier cases without modifications.
Once your sorted you will never want to ride another bike in the woods or bogs, down hills is another matter:eek:

Thanks folks !
I started making a list of all the parts I think I will need ...... so far loads. Thanks for the heads up on the new shafts from Jef Bens Steve. I will send the list I have so far to him and see what he can bring to Telford. Sounds like loads of money :(

Got a very speedy reply from Jef Bens. The new mainshaft is 110 Euro. Sounds good to me. Just that all the other bits add up.

I would change the engagement gear with the mainshaft at the same time then you should be good to go.

Thanks Bill. Yes, I will have the new gear on order too. I have ordered it as a set with the spring, washer etc etc.
