  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Auto wont engage

I am rebuilding a 77 Auto , the first engine ran well but engine seals are gone, I swapped over engines and this one wont go into gear, I have in stages swapped over the entire good transmission! But it will still not go into gear, the pictures show both transmission engaging gears and they both look alright to me, anybody got any idea what I am doing wrong pleaseDSCF0380.JPGDSCF0379.JPG ?

I have the braking spring installed and working and the tick over is nice and slow, the spring,I assume is what pushes the gears into engagement when you release the declutching lever. I have several and they all seem to be the same length but I wonder if after a time they loose their power? It does not seem a very positive system and I am not completely sure I have it right, the manual is not very clear on reassembling!! Thanks for the tip on Forest Stahl, I have another very tired engagement gear and shaft.

The later 420 and 430 have a positive gear engagement system, is it possible to use this on the earlier models and not rely on what must be a rather tired spring?

Yes you can convert to the 420/430 set up my friend has done this,I'll ask him what he did.I think he used a 420 cover on the drive side plus the shaft and gear I think he had to fabricate some thing to keep it in gear because the 420 case has something inside different, but its doable I may see him this weekend.

I would be very interested in how he did it if you could find out. I have managed to sort it out though, stretched the spring, ground the engaging gear onto the shaft in case it was sticking, used the better of the two transmissions and bingo:)

Glad you got it sorted, that cable and spring affair is a pain to get adjusted correctly. One of my friends eliminated his and welded up a lever and made a catch to hold his in gear.
As for the 420 set up you will need to bore out the counter shaft side cover for the larger bearing on the 420 shaft and you also need the fork to engage the gear, there is a gear that you have reverse on the 1st gear side and change a bearing on the kickstart side I may see him tomorrow nite and I'll ask him if he still has the parts and can get some better details on how it was done. He did say that you should have the 79 and newer 390 motor, it is shorter than the earlier 360/390 motor.

Now I have got the gearbox engaging properly I am looking for a declutching lever, I use cable ties round the lever to hold it in as the catch has broken. My spares supplier does not have one. Does anyone know where I could get one or an alternative lever please?

Just a thought Steve ..... some older lawn mowers have a chrome lever with catch to engage the drive. Maybe broaden your search to include these. I seem to remember when I was young (!).... we had a large Ransome petrol cylinder mower with just such an item fitted.

Just dragging up this old thread .....

I too need a handlebar lever for my auto. Steve, did you find a solution ??

Just mucking around with a Honda CT110 and they have a tricky catch on the front brake lever to lock it on.
Might be worth looking at.
