  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

BATTERY OPTIONS

josh310

Husqvarna
AA Class
i see some of you have smaller batteries in your bike. My stock battery is a little bulky and heavy. i have a te310 what are my options and what is your experience with the different types of batteries out there?

Yes, it is both. I think the width was the same, but the depth and height were both smaller. It's definitely a lot lighter.

It comes with a large assortment of foam rubber with adhesive to take up any space left from the larger OEM battery.

Earth-X is a CO company that makes a lithium technology battery that is offered as an option in Beta motorcycles.

Probably be my choice when I replace the standard item.

Sponsor BRP Moto offers a Cafe Husky discount and sells Shorai. I have 2 Shorais and like them - great customer service too. They are slow cranking on your first start in really really cold weather (like don't bother with the button and get the kickstarter out).

I just bought a shorai for my orange bike. It's smaller and a lot lighter than stock. But I like anti-gravity batteries better. More cranking amps than shorai. But also more $$

IMHO anyone running one of the cool, lightweight solid state batteries should give it a little rubber cushioning. I had one go bad which was evident only when the engine was running. The bike would start and idle but stumble when trying to accelerate unless I held the battery in my hand away from the vibrations.

I've had the Shorai for about 6 months so far. It seems well made and comes with a great foam assortment to make it fit in the stock battery box. I got the 14AH which is twice the stock 7AH lead acid weight and weighs probably less than half.

I'm still running a Turn Tech 5 AH that was previously cranking my 510. Good little battery. I've cranked my cold soaked 250 at 26 degrees! It took several attempts but the battery finally warmed up enough to fire up the bike. I've found that seveta/ short bursts with the button warm the battery adequately to obtain rated cranking power. I'll never put a lead acid back in this bike. Matter of fact, when my street bike battery finally quits the replacement will be a Lithium as well.

well my stock Ytz7s finally died- been in the 09TE450 since new (I've had the bike since March of 2009) so into the 4th season.
I planned on riding on Saturday- battery would not turn starter but would cycle the pump. I tested and it showed under 12 volts. I then kicked it once and it started. I loaded the bike. I then road as planned, 20 miles or so of tight technical single track (I ran with the headlight off)- I stalled it about 3 times (brake drag and what not) Kick started everytime- by the end the battery would turn the starter- finished my ride- went home and charged overnight. The Optimate said it was weak the next day- I tested with the Volt meter and it showed a low voltage- and it dropped drastically with load. Its done! I planned on getting a new battery this spring but didn't spend the money. I guess my intuition is dialed in.

I just ordered a Shorai LFX14L2-BS12 210 CCA from BRP-

I know these don't need charging like normal batteries- but do any of you with these type charge them- or do you just store them carefully? did you find a nice cheap compatible charger? My OPtimate- would ruin it (auto desulfication cycles).

Shorai says you have to use their charger with it...

No they don't. From their website:

Q. Can I use Lead-Acid battery chargers or charger/tenders?

A.
Yes. HOWEVER, you may NOT use a charger/tender if it has an automatic "desulfation mode", which cannot be turned off. We have confirmed with Deltran, makers of the "Battery Tender" brand, that their products do NOT have a desulfation mode, and are therefore OK for use with Shorai LFX, for example. But the best possible charger/tender for Shorai LFX is the SHO-BMS01, which will be released on about March 15th 2011, we expect. It uses the 5-pin BMS port in the LFX batteries, in order to monitor, diagnose, and balance the individual cells during charge. And it also has an optimized storage mode that will give the longest possible service life to your LFX.

I ended up just buying a Shorai charger. Its very nice. It has a hanger that works perfectly with the subframe grab handle on our Huskies and has two charging modes (charge and store). It is a lot more compact than a regular automotive battery charger and is light weight. If you get the Shorai charger, make sure that you keep the charging terminal packed with dialectic grease. I found out the hard way, that since our batteries effectively "sit on their backs," this can let water get behind the rubber charging port cover and corrode the terminals.

That said, though, we owned these batteries probably 8 months before I ever thought about charging them and that was only because I was a goober and left the fuel pump on, which drained the battery dry (don't do that). With regular riding, they don't need charging. If you have to put your bike away over the winter or something, I imagine you'd want to keep it on the charger.

Also, I am able to get a Moose air filter in and out without removing the Shorai battery. I haven't tried with the Twin Air yet, but I don't see why I wouldn't be able to.

Ok- I looked ionto this a bit more... food for thought... anyway.

Seems these should never need a charger in theory- but in reality we are prone to making an error and needing to charge it at some point to bring it back to life... in that instance one could find a normal charger that does not put out more than 3amps or something... and does not have desulfication- that would connect to the negative and the positive and charge the individual cells (4) as a sum...

The Shorai charger has a different connector that plugs into the face of the battery (five wire connector) this charger goes through different modes and can bring the shorai from fully discharged to fully charged and charges each cell as needed (separately). That charger ensures not just that the battery is fully charged and not overcharged but that each cell is fully charged and not overcharged...

With this understanding it would seem the best would be to get the Shorai charger to ensure long life- possibly 7 years. Till I can afford that too... I will just hope to not discharge the battery by leaving the ignition on or having an electrical problem....

I hoped it was less complecated and It would not make sence to spend $80 on another charger, but rather get a cheap Harbor Frieght $20 jobbie... well they'd work but it makes sence to get the Shorai one...

DArnIT... mo money mo...

Ballistic 4 cell installed 2011 TE310, CV4 battery is the same.
No issues, a bunch of rides more than a few races.
Light simple and inexpensive.
