• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Brass insert spins ... Any Ideas?

It looks like I am SOL.

I received the replacement tank shroud today. When I tried to remove the screw that holds it to the side of the tank, I found the brass insert is just spinning in the tank. I managed to make a small cut in the old one and removed it that way. I tried holding the bushing with vice grips, but that did nothing. Also tried some PB blaster, no luck there either. I suppose the screw is attached to the insert with locktite, or it was overtightened so much that that broke the brass insert loose from the tank. I checked the one on the other side and it is the same.

Seems to me I'll just need to get that IMS tank sooner than I had planned.

Anyone have any idea? I sure hope so.

Can you get anything like a small screw driver behind it at all...If not you may have to pull it out and use some expoxy to reinstall (be careful to not get any on threads)brass insert..

I allways use antiseize on the brass inserts they gawl to easy..Would never use loctite on the inserts..

Good luck hope you get it loose..

Thanks for the help. Sorry I should have tried to search.

When the frustration sets in I often forget to try search.

Luckily I have access to a lathe. I found proper threaded brass rod at McMaster Carr along with the stainless stopscrews, I like that idea and I'll go ahead and replace all the bolts with the stop screws and nuts. Seems like a good investment in prevention.

I've always used copper slip for stainless bolts in Aluminum. Is there something better for stainless in brass?

So that brings me to my next question.

Are the threaded inserts in the IMS tanks better quality than the originals?

What would you be searching for?

"brass insert"

This is one of those things that cannot be searched for. The only reason I found those threads is because I specifically created a 'tag' called 'rivnut' a long time ago.
