• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Can't kickstart 420AE Sprag clutch slipping - What to do?

This problem has been getting progressively worse and now I can't kick the engine over at all. If I take the 1st gear clutch off the bike and degrease it with carb cleaner I can get it to kick over when the gearbox is dry, but as soon as I add ATF it just slips. I cleaned out the sprag clutch andmade sure that the dog bones were able to move, but they just will not grip with oil in the gearbox.

I know that this bike has broken some 1st gear springs in the past and dug off some of the magnesium side cover so I sprayed out the inside of the crankshaft just under the 1st gear clutch and got lots of metal flakes out of the end of the crankshaft. I sprayed out the sprag clutch but got no metal flakes. It will kick the bike over when dry, but slips when covered with oil.

Is there a way to get the brass end plates off the sprag clutch so I can get a good look at the dog bones? Or maybe I need to give them more clearance by driving the brass ends off a bit?

I also noticed that the 1st gear clutch drum has about 30 thousandths of an inch side to side play when mounted on the crankshaft. There is one rather thick spacer on the shaft already. Is it supposed to have more than one? That might be some of the rattling sound I used to hear back in the day when I could still start the bike.

One final question. Is there a source for 1st gear clutch springs and the aftermarket 1st gear spring cover plate?

Thanks, Steve

Same thing happened to mine. The one way sprag in the kickstater gets full of slimmy crap, grease and metal paste. The only way to clean it out is to pull the bearing out,the crap is behind the bearing and is hard to see and not easy to get out without destroying the spring cable thing that threads through it.I bought a replacement at crazy money, close to $400oz,that got reduced to $280 after some crying my me to the then Imported Hans Applegrin in OZ.I would now pull the bearing out as gentle as possible, maybe the connector can be replaced on its own from a bearing suppler or you don't brake the joiner getting it out, don't know.I have had a few 1st gear springs made and after some testing will post up where they were made. Its in Oz so not super easy to get but with supply drying up.BTW dont use ATF in the gearbox, use either 5wt top of the line suspenion fluid of the right stuff Univis J26.Just to add,the spag I was on about is inside the acual kickstart lever.
