I have a 2013 TE511. The owner's manual says the chain should be set to 5 mm. Is that right? It seems awfully tight from what I'm used to on other bikes. What's everybody's experience/recommendation?
As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.
When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.
Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.
Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.
Thanks for your patience and support!

I sit on my bike then adjust the chain tension with two fingers between the swing arm and chain and seems to work fine even after 2000k.
Our Italian motors are different. A 1" socket as a spacer and were set. 449/511 are totally different.I think it is not 5mm, but 35mm from the manual..
Those are some long arms you must have my friend.![]()
Not on cts my friend.I think it is not 5mm, but 35mm from the manual..
You need to understand that on every other bike there is so much slack because when the swingarm goes up and down it changes length relative to the front sprocket - so you need all that slack so the chain doesn't get too tight or break. On this bike, when the swingarm moves, it stays the same exact distance from the front sprocket so the chain tension is the exact same throughout the full range of motion. Thats why you don't need any slack. So 5 mm is barely any slack at all. I took it for a test ride and it seemed like I could feel a tight spot as I slowly cruised in 2nd gear. I hate this uncertainty. To add to my angst, the service manual has in parentheses next to the 5mm the conversion to inches and calls it 0.04 inches. What the hell is that? I wonder if someone would be willing to go to the trouble of posting of video of the correct chain play. I am just finding this unbelievable.
