  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Charger for Lithium SSB Power sports battery

Hi All,

I've got a 7 Stage Battery Charger (SCA, 12 Volt, 10 Amp) from Super Cheap Auto. It allows for selecting gel, calcium & lead acid type of battery. Can I use this to charge my SSB PowerSports 220cca battery? The battery went flat when left my dash light on for weeks.. doh! I can't kick start the bike as there's not enough charge to pump fuel - efi (2012-te310).

I've emailed SSB sales but no reply as yet. The SSB website says:
SSB PowerSport Lithium Batteries are also one of the only Lithium Ion Batteries that can be charged using normal 12V car battery chargers / alternators.

What setting should I use, lead acid? Or will it damage the battery? Thanks in advance

OK, so I found out that my battery shoudln't be charged with this charger as step 1 of the 7 steps is 'desulphation' - which wrecks lithium batteries.

I bought a new '3 stage charger' this morning, it seems to be doing the job.

Ive got the same charger and nearly the same battery. SSB LIon in all of my bikes. They are so good ive still never flattened one, a great battery. The last one I bought was even dropped to my front door by the sales guy, how good is that. Good idea on getting a specific charger as they have very different stuff happening inside the 'cells and it says on their site the desulphation phase can wreck them when charging, as you noticed also.

Good to know I'm on the right track. Yeh my ssb has 220 CCA, I think stock is around 120. With efi and also earlier starter issues I'm glad I bought one.

Bit of feedback, the battery charged nicely with the 3 stage charger.

I checked it after 3 hours and the charger was saying full (from 3 volts to 13 - not bad). I put it in the bike and went for a half day ride, plenty of hills and stop starting with a group of mates - it never missed a beat. I guess I can put the charger somewhere safe as hopefully I won't be needing it for a while!
