  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Coolant system pressure test?

Jon

Husqvarna
AA Class
I'm trying to do a coolant system pressure test on my 13 txc310. Have a matco pressure tester with a bunch of different adapters but none of them fit the radiator. Anyone know the size that fit the radiators. I don't want to just guess at buying the right adapter.

I have been using coolant and need to fill up multiple times a day. I rebuilt my waterpump and that seemed to help a bit but still using it. I have drained my oil and haven't noticed anything coolant in the oil. So I'd like to do a pressure test and see if I can find out where its going before I start taking the engine apart.

Well it is either going in the engine into your oil or outside the engine where you should smell it.

Do you smell it?

My 2 stroke had a slow leak for years that I never smelled that was leaking out of the hose but since the 2 stroke runs much cooler I never smelled it.
4 stroke you should smell.

no haven't smelt any coolant.
So I am thinking it is going into the oil but would like to just run a pressure test but need to find the correct size for the radiator.
I was having a problem with rad hoses getting cut from the gas tank clearance even with spacers, but I think (knock on wood) I have solved the problem there.

It's a bad cap, I bet- unless your oil level is rising or the oil is milky or the exhaust is "wet".

You could probably pressurize your system through the overflow... but I don't know how you would monitor it. Maybe sacrifice an old cap (KTM guys change 'em a lot) and remove a portion of the lower seal. And put a tee with a pressure gauge on the overflow. This would test everything but your cap- which is probably bad.

I suppose there is a slight chance your crossover hose has a pressure leak (and leaks mostly vapor), but it seems to me you'd smell that too.

good luck.

I replaced it with an unrelated issue, I was riding at an ohv park came back to the truck for a break and checked my coolant and topped it off and forgot to either put the cap back on or tighten it and realized within the 1st couple seconds of riding afterwards that it was missing so that ended my day there.:banghead: So had to buy a new one after a lengthy search for the one I lost.

yeah, I did the same thing with the stock cap. I couldn't find it either- I can only think that I was not turning it all the way tight. The newer cap (a Myler's with "ears") is a 100% better.

So, were you losing coolant before with the old cap?

ya was having the same issue, has not gotten any better or any worse with the new cap.

I just want to run a pressure test and see if I can chase down the leak or see if its filling up the cylinder before I tear into the top end.

I bought all the gasket and stuff to do a top end minus the actual cylinder and piston, ill get those if it comes down to it but would rather not spend the money if I don't have to.

Well, maybe use a small hand pump (like a kids ball pump) and pressurize the system through the overflow hose as above (I wouldn't go greater than 10psi.... hence the ball pump)- and give her a listen. Maybe you could rig up the Matco pump.

If vapor was/is going into your combustion chamber, the piston crown will be clean of carbon and, most likely, so will the valves. Shiny clean.

I'm guessing you checked your hose clamps (especially the x-over hose) for tightness.

good luck.

yes have checked the clamps, I also have the silicone hoses installed with the thermostat deleted. Also I started the bike up and let it get up to operating temp then I shut it off and pulled the tank quick and plug then used a bore scope to check the top of piston and it looked like there was carbon build up on it. Definitely not clean so not sure.
