  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi there, just refitted the rad after a crush damage repair and i went to put coolant in and realised that i dont know if it should be a mix or a straight coolant.

Is there any difference? Can i just use the valvoline car coolant, or should i buy special bike coolant? Its an 08 TE 450

I have heard that automotive coolant is kind of rough on the coolant system seals. I always used to use it, but have recently switched to motorcycle specific coolant.

I've used Engine Ice in all my bikes for years and have never had a bike overheat. Ever.

I use Engine Ice coolant. It is made for motorcycles but not sure if you can get it in Australia. Never had an issue with over heating.

I usually read the back of the bottle to see if it is supposed to be mixed, some are premixed and some need mixing. I would use a car type coolant - but as you can see others have varying opinions.

Also use Engine Ice (as I mentioned in other post)......w/couple ounces of Redline Water Wetter (as not mention in other post).

Maybe a downside to Engine Ice or waterless coolants is if for whatever reason (like loss of coolant for damaged radiator and/or split hose), you find yourself out some place where extra fluid is needed and water is all you have........but that would be temporary until you can fix, flush and refill.

I do know some guys that use standard auto 50/50 mix antifreeze, like Prestone, and claim they have no problem.
I was forced to use some last July for a couple days and do not think it does as good of job as Engine Ice. (but will admit it could have been a weak mix)
(speaking of which....have a question http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/showthread.php?p=47944#post47944 )

I was at Halls the other day and they said they had a product that is the same price as Engine Ice but better. I can't remember the name! I have Engine Ice in my KTM and it has still overheated in some rough terrain (but it is a KTM lol).

Thats what I use, Auto coolant.
I just make sure to get the one safe for aluminum. Which is the low/no silica types. Then mix it 50/50 with distilled water.
