    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

countershaft seal

There really isn't a seal it is a sealed bearing. Well it is like a double sealed bearing with one seal the one towards the center removed.

One could try and pry out the seal and just press in another one. The last engine I put together I got three double sealed bearings of that size it is probably 6205 would have to check, pried both seals off the ones for the drive side crank bearings and one from the inside of the countershaft bearing so I have plenty of spares if I choose to do that.

It is possible to get that bearing out as long as you don't have the 87-88 cases which have no little plate with four screws like yours should have. It has been discussed and pictures of various pullers on here and links over to ktm talk about some thread of changing a ball to a roller bearing without splitting the cases. I never did it but know the dealer did it to one bike I bought used. I have been lead to believe he had some attachment to a slap hammer not a puller like all the motorcycle forum discussion stuff.

That is the most likely bearing to fail, and in the intrest of preserving that bearing pocket (which might not be as tight as you expect) it is probably sensible to put in a new bearing. There can be some discussion about whether to leave both seals on the bearing but I pry one off like origional. I recall the folks on here who have done it say it stopped the leaking but I maintain if that bearing pocket is too sloppy the oil could come around the outer race.

Thanks for the input. My case does have the plate with 4 screws. How do you suggest removing the bearing? Should I try heating the case with a heat gun and prying the bearing out with an improvised slap type hammer?

It looks like the link was over to adv rider about a ktm not ktm talk. though I kind of suspect there might even have been another similar thread on here.

If I was to try it I guess the easiest thing to try first might be to get some mig solid wire maybe 0.030 and thread it through the ball area in four places, attach to two metal rods, hold one in each hand after warming case with electric heat gun and see if it just can be wiggled out. The ktm article shows an official puller.

Years ago things were diffeent the owner of the small husky shop was an A or AA rider and only half the time had any employee there. He switched out that bearing as a preventative measure. Now it seems different.

There is an aftermarket setup that has a seal in the cover and a sleeve that fits between the bearing and sprocket with an "o" ring on the bearing end to seal it all up.
Was pricey so I made my own.
Works well. :)
