  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Dazed And Confused...what Bike Is Right?

Husqvarna
So I'm new here and am happy this site exists as there isnt to much first hand knowledge out thwre about these bikes. Iv been doing a lot of home work and have narrowed down to husqvarna as the only choice for me. After seeing them, at central cycles in new Egypt nj , iv been spoiled by the quality and look of these bikes. So what it comes down,to...2011 te250 or te650? I know there is a huge difference in-between but I'm torn between the two concepts. Im too afraid of the radical design of the te449 and the price! My main question would be what is a safe crusing speed for the 250? I don't plan to take major roads but even some of the side streets here are 50 mph zones. Hate to ring the thing out. Second, just how hard can these te630s be road? My biggest fear is to buy one be happy with the street stuff but look like an idiot in the tight trails. Iv owned somewhat heavy and much more under powered bikes. Ie. Yamaha tw200. I could acctualy move pretty fast on it in the turns....any comparison here? Haha I know this is all apples and oranges but I feel like if anything husq has what I need but at the same time...its not enough. Ugh wish there was a te 412 with the seat hight and width of the 630. Maybe when I got back for a test ride Il know something but I'm really looking for advice from ppl that live with the bikes and know there limits....a test ride can't give me that. Thanks a lot!

I am supprised nobody has written a novel on your question. I have the 2011 TE310. Came from Honda CRF450X. I am short and old(51). They need to make a 250/310 with a proper six speed. Unless you are tall and strong the 450's and higher are just tough in the tight stuff. I like the weight of the 310 but it just doesn't have the top end potential of a big bore bike. No suprise to anyone I am sure. For me I am going to live with the 310. If I will be doing a long ride I will put back the stock sprockets. If I will be doing tight technical stuff, the 50 rear goes on. Nothing is perfect. The bike is nice. Good luck. Oh, like other guys I put on a lower seat. Big difference.

The 610/630's are the only ones with the wide-ratio transmission. If you want to be able to go on the freeway and comfortably cruise at 75-80 mph
then look at the "Big Daddy's". Keep in mind that they can hold their own on the trail. Anything below that will be a close-ratio tranny, will be lighter and
far superior on the trail than Big Daddy but will not be as freeway friendly. There's always a little give and take, just pick your poison.

Haha thanks for the replies. I did forget about how the 250 and 310 come with that 40 rear. What type of crusing speed do you get with that on the 310? I think I realized the price is going to dictate more than anything now. $170 a month for a te250 is great for me. The 630 would be a bit more and it doesn't sound as soild as the other te model's. The 610/630 fourm is full of underpowered problems, leaks and other stuff I won't have money to fix. Maybe Il get lucky and they will make me a deal for the 310 because I imagine its at least a little less stressed on the road than the 250. I just need to get out there riding asap! Hopefully going back this Wednesday to pull the trigger....or at least pick the bullet. Hoping to join the group of owners!

Owner of 09 TE250, with 13/50 sprockets on, 60mph has the bike spinning @ 10,000rpm (motor won't last long if your going to do this for long periods). I ride tight trail with 12/50 on and it works good. That little 250 isnt meant to run down the highway, its at home on the tight trails.

Thanks for that info...owch...thinking of that is making my head hurt haha 10000 rpm. Do you think the 40 in the rear would make 50mph a decent curise speed for say 10 miles max? Iv been Google maping all the places id be exploring here in south jersey. About 15 miles to basto village. Half would be 35 - 45 the other half 50+. My problem is I don't have a truck but don't want to have to buy a huge bike to get to the tight trails.

The TE 250 and 310's are racing machines that are street legal. They are not Honda XR's. My 2011 310 will barely do 40mph on the highway without the piston coming out. 50 tooth rear. Obviously it is a little better with the 40 rear. I did a small amount of climbing with the 40 rear and it was not to bad. I am only 157 pounds without gear so the bike is not working to hard. Yes I need to lose weight but that isn't the issue here. A friend of mine did a Mojave Desert two day 350 mile dual sport ride on a 1991 XR 250. It had a small rear sprocket and he did ok with the big bore bikes. I guess the issue is how fast do you need to go, how long do you want the motor to last, are you racing, etc.
For me, I don't need to go 85mph. The best of luck.

S..Yamaha tw200. I could acctualy move pretty fast on it in the turns....any comparison here?..
The tw200 is an interesting bike, and has it's own charm about it. I believe it has a really large gear box spacing i.e. if the motor was going 5000 rpms in first gear what ever speed it was going, then 5000 rpms in top gear would be significantly more than the TEs.

On a TE, the spread is 2.5, which really isn't that 'wide'. You will go 2.5x faster in top gear than 1st gear at the same rpm. Which is quite similar to the CRF450x last I checked. For a crf450R and other mx oriented bikes the ratio is about 2.0

The closer the gear box spacing, the better the chance to be in the proper gear when riding in the intended environment.

I would think it would work fine, and have gearing low enough for the tight trails. Not much fun above 60mph though, especially on the interstate when the trucks are around. Light bikes & wind are not a great combination.

Hmm 157....wish I still was I'm about 175 with ten to loose. I should take that into consideration for the atreet riding. I guess if I had an xr I wouldn't mind beating the heck out of the motor but is feel to guilty with these bikes. Haha the tw.....oh the memories....it was my dads so when my rm125 broke I would ride this. I was using that as a comparison to the 630 because I could still rock my friends in the rutted turns , on their cr 80s at the time. This was a long time ago and I was always heavier then them. They used to video me doing it and it looked pretty stupid and crazy at the same time...even broke the sub frame hitting table tops haha but any way....that's what I was wondering with the 630 if skill could make up for a bit of the bikes awkwardness.

As you said I should be able to make the smaller te work...maybe a 42t....and just hiding in the back roads....I wont see many big rigs there...thanks

Calling the dealer in a bit to see what my next step is.

Just called. Sounds like the te 250 is it for me. Said I should be ok with the 40t rear for 50mph for a few miles. Anything bigger would be pushing the monthly payments for me. I have a co signer and Tomarow Il see if I have to put anything down. The financing right now is amazing. If t wasn't for that it wouldn't work for me. Very excited. Thank you bmw for making it easy for anyone.
