I drowned my TXC 250 yesterday in a deeper than expected post downpour puddle (I know! big rookie mistake. Lesson definitely learned). Anyway, I got it home, pulled the plug, exhaust, and carb and drained the oil. There was definitely water in there, but I think most of it entered through the pipe. Flipped the bike upside down, cranked the kick starter and hopefully drained most of it out.
Put it all back together and tried forever to get it started. For a while all it did was make a loud pfft noise out of the exhaust every now and then. I'm guessing it was backfiring. It did try a few times with the pipe remove and when it made the pfft notice there was flame popping out of the exhaust port. When it wouldn't start I put the exhaust back on. The compression seemed good so I kept going. For the next half hour I continued to alternate between the e starter and kicking. Finally in between pffts it started to make a gig like it actually might want to go every 5-10 attempts. Kept at it for another 10-15, a few gurgles here and there but still wouldn't run.
I killed the battery and hooked up a car battery I had lying around which had a lot more juice, and it a finally started! I had just about given up, but now it starts just as easily as it did before and sounds fine, hopefully it's good.
Now I'm worried about how much sand and dirt might have entered the crankcase. When I drained the oil, there was definitely some grit in the screen filter. How worried should I be? I'm going to drain the oil again at least once more to make sure I got all of the water and grime, should I do more? Does this warrant splitting her open?
Any opinions appreciated.
