  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Electrex instructions

Would anyone here have an instruction manual/sheet for an Electrex STK-018?
I have it on my 500 and before I start looking at carburation I just want to be sure my ignition timing is spot on.
I searched the electrex site but couldn't find anything.
Any help appreciated, Tony.

Did you go for 2,8mm or 2,2mm piston travel before top dead center when setting the flywheel at 20° advance ?

I set it at 2.5, thinking that was a good safe amount of advance.
I think I originally set it at 2.2 and had it at 0 degrees instead of the advance mark like I should have.
That was the thing that surprised me, 2.5 BTDC and set at the advance mark instead of zero, as I must have assumed when I originally set it.
It almost seems like you're doubling the advance if that makes sense? That must be how the ignition needs it to be, indicating where it will run at full advance I assume?
Whatever it is, it's a big improvement in performance, thanks again Bryll!
Tony.

Full advance? These ignitions don’t advance with revs to my knowledge. Static timing. Or am I mistaken?

STK-018 kit has a CDI unit included, it should take care of the timing.
But you might be right since no drawing showing the ignition curve is included in the kit.
STK-407 kit for the Yamaha SR500 includes a ignition advance curve sheet.

The Electrex retards the timing for starting, but I'm not sure if it has an "advance curve", however Bryll's comment would suggest that either some or all do.
