  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Engine oil in air box

09Husky310

I was changing the air filter in my te310 2009 and found a small amount of engine oil at the bottom of the air box enough to put the top of my finger in. Anyone know what this could be. On the last ride I did tip the bike on its side but didn't think that would have done it?

me bro had a minor stack on his crf450r a while back(basically looped out-funny as all f#*k!) and bike kept running near on upside down. when i finally stopped laughing and lifted the bike off him we noticed it was leaking a fair bit of oil(to the point we thort he cracked a case). traced it back to airbox, took seat off & airbox had probably 100ml of oil in it! we let it settle for a few minutes as i told him how piss weak his hill climb attempt was, checked oil level which was still in range & started it. blew blue smoke for coupla minutes(i was sure honda stopped making 2 strokes!?) then came good. im no mechanic but guessing its just oil getting past valves/piston-stuck open maybe?-when bike was turned off but still upside down. im sure this was no help to you but it just made me laugh thinking of that crash!

The head (and thus the crankcase) is vented to the airbox. A downed bike will basically leak oil thru this vent into the airbox. Even if the bike is not dropped, there is an oil mist that can condense on the sides of the airbox over many miles, and show up as an oil puddle in the airbox.

Exactly- crakcase vent tube to airbox/tube whether from oil mist or falls it collects there: Behind the screen on the bottom there is a little teardrop shaped decant that I think is intended to collect the oil- if not it does a good job. I started cleaning that decant and absorbed the oil with a rag after I first noticed it- whe I would change/clean the airfilter. But I don't worry about it anymore- doesn't seem to effect the bike's performance even when doing endos/stoppies.

This is such a common topic, it ought to be a sticky or something. Wait'll you actually fall on the right side of the bike. The oil will really get into the airbox. It can also get quite messy if the engine is overfilled.

bike taking a nap on
the right side = oil in airbox, I wish I didn't know this fact !
