  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

ever continuing stalling issues

Cheers Birdman, yeah when I picked my bike up new it was already de restricted. I have dropped my bike off to the dealer to let them hook up with the IBeat and see if any settings have altered, no reason for them to obviously but I didn't know what avenue to take next. I will try the bike after the dealers fine tuning but if no joy will definately through the bung back in, may even do it anyway but I just want to see waht the actual fix was!
Cheers for the tip mate.

Yes, I have the power up kit, but I don't know much about the set up. I have the Power Commander III which gives you more control of the fuel map than iBeat does.

the PCIII can give you results, but of course, that depends on a few things, first and foremost the problem needs to be fuel related, secondly, whoever is changing the tune needs to know what he/she is doing, downloading a canned map is a lottery, unless you get YOUR bike dynoed there is no guarantee that the map you are using will be better than what was previously loaded. and that's irrespective of whether the canned map matches your set up or not, it's very easy to see two bikes of the same year, set up and mileage need different tunes with more than 5% differences at the same point in the map. While road bikes are a lot more forgiving of an inaccurate tune, the precise throttle requirements of low speed single lane tracks or tricky hillclimbs highlight poor set up relatively quickly.
The PCIII in my opinion is over rated, sure it's adjustable and anyone with a laptop can plug and play but maybe that's half the issue, because really, unless you get it set up on a dyno, with the tps set properly beforehand you're never going to be happy, if you are, it's more good luck than good judgement.
I have one on a highly modified road bike that works perfectly, once run in it went to a competent dyno, was set up in about 20mins and hasn't been touched since, using them like that they're great but if you have been used to tinkering with carbs, changing jetting for altitude and humidity and what not, leaving an injected set up alone can i imagine be difficult.
Basically, i guess i'm saying, if you have a power commander, get that set up properly before chasing timing and other issues, i have a carbed TE so know very little about the iBeat but from what i've heard it's flexible enough to manage the injection fine, why bother with something else that can go wrong?

Stalling

I don`t know if anyone else has mentioned this yet but I had a stalling, popping and backfiring issue and I cured all my problems by tightening my coil connections, (crimped the spade connectors, they were very loose). The difference was like night and day!

hey Birdman,
That's encouraging. What do you mean by "standard bung?"
Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in response ive been away!
By standard bung i mean the insert that comes with the 09 model Huskys in the muffler. It is about 20cm long and has a diameter of about 20mil, so it really plugs up the muffler. Results in better starting, no stalling, more torque, easier power supply, less noise, no backfire or flames, faster lap times!
Go Figure!

Thanks Birdman, that's what I thought you meant. Here in the U.S. it's a catalytic converter and is apparently pretty restrictive. It sounds like it does "fall out" of a lot of bikes, and then they run better.

Thanks- I do think that should effect the tune of the bike to give more low end- my bike screams and has alot of power up on top- I don't use/need all the top end and would trade for a little down lower.

That's what we call the "db Killer" the "euro spark arrestor" like Rick Ramsey has I ordered the wrong one- from the fiche and ended up with something about the same as the US spark arrestor but had an inch of tube rather than the screen- HOWEVEr- I plan on welding some more tube on the end- What I will do is since I need to reach 96 db is enlongate it and then cut it till about 95db - and hope to achieve more low end too-

on the left is the US spark arrestor on right DB killer pic borrowed from rick's site

And just as a reminder to '08 owners, that long DB killer fits only '09s. Not even close on '08 Power-up exhaust (and I think the stock one too).

I thought there was a DB Killer for the 08's...obviously not like the one pictured. Anyone? If so is it a DB Killer/Sparkie combo?

David

Ok I'm confused. I thought Birdman meant he took the 09 catalytic converter OUT of the muffler and it ran better. Not that he installed the DB killer. Clarification? I think we're confusing the front end and back end of the muffler?

The long exhaust restrictor sits in the rear of tail pipe for 09 TE 450's and is held in there by a circlip. My new bike came with it already out as the dealer said it runs slighty better and sounds even better. I was having issues with the bike stalling in tight single trail but after I droped my bike off back to the dealer and he hooked up with the laptop it made such a difference with it stalling. I havn't found out exactly what setting he changed but it did the trick. He also reccomended if I was to put the restrictor back in chop about 40 mm off the end of it so it doesn't run like a pig. I will probably put the restrictor back in just to compare the difference and let you all know.

how do you know that- I "guessed" that they would work- but didn't do a parts cross ref- my buddy with an 08 510 uses the same circlip and sparky-

But Thats why dealers get the big bucks- to know everything about all models- I would just call Halls and Ask if that fits an 08 PU Arrow exhaust-

There are three Husky DB killers--The short spark arrestor one that comes on USA bikes, the short hollow one that comes on Euro/Australia bikes, and the long one that is optional for '09 bikes. At least that's my working knowledge of it.

I already had the spark arrestor version and I ordered one of each of the two others from Hall's and tried fitting them on my bike. The '08 can has a curve to it inside and the long '09 DB killer can be inserted only halfway before it hits the bend. It's just a no-go so I returned it to Hall's.

I kept the short hollow one that is very similar to the USA spark arrestor but without a screen. It takes the edge off when "on the gas" but doesn't do much else. Then I made my own bent extension to mimic the long DB Killer. It was very effective but was temporary and didn't hold up to the vibration. Now I'm working on a more permanent solution.

Stalling, flame out and popping on decel

When I first got my 08 TE510 I used to have all kinds of stalling, popping on decel and flame out. When I removed the tank to install my IMS fuel tank, I found the spade connectors on the ignition coil to be very loose. I crimped them tighter, (it was actually a little tough to get them back on) and cured all my problems. This was a very simple fix for a problem that should not be there to begin with. I think coil connections should be studs with nuts and lock washers, especially with the vibrations of a 4 stroke single.
