• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Former husky rider looking for new mx race bike

yzrider

Husqvarna
AA Class
Im super interested in getting a new husky for mx only. Either converting a wr250 or 300 for mx or the cr125 or a tc449. I know Im all over the place but they all could really be made into super competitive bikes on the track in my opinion. The 125/144 super light supeer fun and ridiculously cheap. 3699?!

WR250 smooth tractable power, allowed against the 250f's can you say a 3 stroke on the track? Holeshotting the field on a husky consistently sounds like a riot, I read the mxa build of the wr300 with the pro circuit mods and Im sure the wr250 could get the same gains essentially too. I wold run the lectron vs the keihn though and most likely skip the cr ignition/flywheel something about the smoother delivery and hook up has me thinking it would make a great moto bike. The biggest complaint 2 stroke testers have is that the bikes are harder to ride and harder to get traction with. A 250 2 stroke obviously makes more power than a 250f but being more explosive lots of times the riders lose drive, lose control and lose seconds every lap. A broader wr250 powerband could help that alot. But the overall boost is certainly more than 90% of the 250fs out there I'd imagine esspecially with the pc mods im sure it would have holeshot grabbing potential for sure!

Lastly is the tc449 for me, a brand new 2013 efi 450 for 4999 is a steal. The slower revving torque of the husky 4t's mean you hook up instead of spinning and can corner more aggressively without fighting the bike. I ride and race mx at the b class level. Cant make up my mind had a tc250 before and owned many brands and models I know suspension set up is basically all you need on modern bikes and use the bikes traits to your advantage. Much like the 250 2 stroke 450's have more then enough power so getting that power down to the dirt without losing traction and time is the most important in my mind. Explosive 450's tire me out faster then wrestling with a grizzly bear.

I had a yz450 '03 and hated it on the track. I loved all my 250 2 strokes and spend alot of time on 250fs. I havent ridden or raced a 125 since my first full size bike and at the time I wasnt as skilled or developed as I am now. Sold it to "cheat" with the 250fs since I wasnt really good enough to keep the 125 on the pipe like I needed to. I know now I could ride the 125 much harder. With all that said anyone have any input for me? I would spend the money on a revalve and respring on whatever bike I come up with. My current bike is a '09 yz250f pretty well set up for me I bought it brand new it has 20 hours on it I wont be selling it so itll be in addition.

The most competitive modern racing 2 stroke in the Husky line is the 125/144 (OEM range) with the added ability to get into the 165 aftermarket kit range as well.
True about the old school 250/300 WR to CR conversion, but by the time you finish that project you may be up in the high 4s or even 5 digit cost. Bobby G made the ZipTy 300 a winner a few years back against many more modern design 2 strokes. And in the ammie ranks some guy could win on a stock WR250 or 300.

As far as the motor work for the wr/cr i think it would be 260 for head mods, 300 for an exhaust, and 300 for a carb. Add in suspension work which i need for any bike at 190 and semi speedy on the track.

The cr144 I would do suspension and lectron and be happy probably maybe head mods.

Husky 449 would be suspension and shut up. Cr/WR would be most expensive because of the price of the bike nobody is discounting them, the 144 would probalby be the most fun overall bt being 190 on a 125 with the mx and sx type tracks i ride makes me nervous about getting over the jumps i\out of tight corners. More corner speed can solve that, but you cant always buy skill haha

if yer 190# you will need springs and way more final/rebound damp no matter what.... that said-

bone stock 125/144 CR will do you very well if you are fast.
i personally saw TCP's (sponsor here) bone stockers off the showroom floor doing just that at the world champs two days ago w/ almost zero prep time. w/ bolt ons they are faster than the factoryish KTM like what laninovich was on need proof watch one go up mt. st. helens they aint slow and are bomb proof. call paul at Tri-County Powersports he has one waiting for you now.

while it aint a 195# 125cc, the new WR300 is nice for a dual-duty. loose the t-stat, there's threads on that here. do it now. it's about 5$ in parts. gets some XF coolant too. dump the stock stuff NOW.
ok- back to the bike... it has the new Ducatti ignition so its a win win with zap and the flywheel weight for hard dry tracks and its already geared for MX. i dont care what the dyno charts say either what matters is lap times. i have one and laugh at the dyno charts it must be spinning the rear. the stock pipe aint too bad not heavy its decent. toss the sparky and shove a short PC rrace muffler on it, AND, get the JD kit with the #9 nozzle jet before anything, install this stuff and hang the hell on, no really. after your new suspension, not counting that, that's only 260$ in mods and it's already wicked fast. boom. done. race. smile.

id pass on the 250 what the opint same as the 300 almost weight wise so if yer not AMA who cares run the big bore go age class and dig that grunt what clutch who needs it. with a pipe, muffler and JD kit in the stock carb if you out-run that motor then send the jug to Zip-Ty or Pro Circuit and get the race head, PC plat pipe, and- some [race gas]. you'll need it.

then start thinking about suspension again if yer going that fast you'll need more spring and more final and rebound again. if ya still want more then get a KX/CR500 or nitrous. two weigh more and one is $$$$.

$10,000 4-strokes are for rich kids and paid riders....welcome to team braap.

I completely agree with all you said. Only reason I'm considering the wr250 is it is eligible to race against the 250f's at all my local races.

I prefer the 250 over the 300. EZer to start, makes great power, EZer to jet, gets better milage, vibs less, and yes, eligible for the 250F class, etc. I think a worked over WR250 would be a good MX bike. Pipe and Lectron and suspension and go. Nice motors and solid bike. The suspension is the week point but your addressing that with most any bike anyway. Sounds fun.

Were you saying a bone stock 144 outpulls a factory 250f uphills? I know its all about keeping it in the sweet spot but thats some serious grunt then. How does the power delivery and output compare to a 05+ yz125? I rode one briefly and was impressed with the roll on power/low end (for a 125) I honestly looked a couple times to make sure it was a 125 I couldn't believe it haha. If its better than that I dont know what im waiting for.

Pulls as hard or harder everywhere. With a pipe it is no contest. The YZ is very good, the husky is just as good or better. Heck i just revamped a 97 RM125, it runs hard too (has new piston and perf pipe)

all that said, and respect PVdukie, I think most 250F's will smoke a 125 in a long uphill drag with equal riders. Dynos are not the end all info but...

Yeah its obvious coming out of corners mostly that 250f just start earlier making power. Way less shifting. But this threads not for that.

I know ive seen videos on YouTube and watching a 125 in a race it becomes pretty obvious how lazy, and slow all of us are becoming in corners. The average 125 rider is so much faster in to the corners and takes so many lines other bikes can't.
I love my yz250f it does everything well and is super solid reliability wise. Just looking for something else while the husky's are still the husky's ive come to defend and love the last few years.

Thanks for all the input so far!

I dont want another 250f sized bike ive had 3 250f's now and while I love them the other sized bikes are also a blast as well and depending on the track some bikes are much more effective. Sandy loamy tracks a cr/wr250 the extra boost would be much appreciated. A 144 would be a blast everywhere. And a 449 sure would be sweet to just dial in the throttle and clear most any jump. Its surprising not one vote fot the 450. All the reviews and feedback from those who have ridden it seems like a very promising bike with just suspension work.

Anyone have any feedback on the 449? Im really considering pulling the trigger here soon. The 449 is winning me over lately the wr is out of the running its too expensive because of the price of the bike it needs the most work and the 18 inch rear wheel is a bummer for me too.

The 125 and the 449 are the same price from the dealer well within 300 or so dollars anyway. Im leaning towards the 449. All the power you can ever need, the center of gravity is said to be super low, very stable and easy to steer once you get used to it. The power is smooth and steady from all the tests and reviews ive read. In the shootouts its attacked for being too smooth and "slow". But really its a 450 how slow can it be. I can clear all the jumps with my "slow" yz250f it suffers from the same shooutout problems as the huskys the power is too smooth and low-mid focused. I'd have to imagine the husky is much more powerful then my yz even factoring in the weight difference.

Im rambling Im just excited and looking to talk bikes a bit before I make the move haha

Mate I loved riding a TE 450 09 on the track - it turned really well and was great on jumps so I am sure the TC 449 would be good - post in 4 storke section for more attention

get the 449 at the discounted price.. you will love it and NOT give up anything to the other brands. Thing handles great and jumps awesome. If you were close, you could spin some laps on mine... I haven't touched the suspension yet, works pretty well(enough) til first suspension service, then it will be off to Zip-Ty.
