• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

frame in way of removing clutch cover????? '83 XC175

Husqvarna
B Class
I recently took possession of a very decent '83 XC175. Initial goal is to evaluate mechanical condition to repair/rebuild as necessary. When I attempted to pull the clutch cover however, found the frame rail is in the way!

Must engine be pulled for clutch access? Owners manual makes no reference to this. Says to simply "pull cover".

Please see pic below to illustrate. Note, "fresh" metal on end of kicker shaft is result of welds I had to grind off to remove kicker. Someone had welded the kicker base to the shaft - only because the base was stripped out! Fortunately, shaft splines are fine. However, I do need a kickstarter assembly - or just the base, if available. Anyone have one they wish to turn into cash?

Thank you for providing this information. Frame # confirms bike as an '83 model, but engine # is 2040, which points to it being a 1982.

Ted,
Yes that would make sense, as they (Husky) changed the frame design in 1983, I have a 1981 & a 82 CR Frame & Swingarm which is basically same as the 81-82 XC, except they don't have the loop for the back fender, if you need one.

Thanks for the offer, John. My XC does have a rear frame loop. Do you have any other parts to sell? Per my initial post, I'm in need of a kicker.

Ted,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you need to get the clutch cover off to get the kicker to work now.
Once you remove the kicker from it's shaft you need to re clock it, in the correct position to get it to work.
There's a spring mechanism with a ramp that positions the kicker properly, the ramp has a set of
jaws which locks kicker while you kick it. The Spring returns the whole mechanism back to start position
and releases the jaws.
Anyway you need to get the side case off to adjust everything.

The 2040 engine tag was used from '77-'82, so having a 2040 tag does not mean its an '82. The 125/175 DID NOT get the new cases in '83, the reason the '83 has a different case number of 2093 is they changed the countershaft to use the same sprocket as the new engines, where the 2040 had the '76-79 countershaft type, other than that a 2040 is identical in every way to a 2093. All the way up to '86 with the last Swedish 125 it had the non primary kick 2040 cases/bottom end with a water cooled top end and a clutch cover that had a water pump. The rest of the bottom end was identical from '77 through '86. The side case will easily come off because the shift lever and kick start lever come off with the case, the cover only has to move a couple of MM to come off, the frame will not prevent it from coming off.

With Husky, I would not be surprised to find out they used left over 2040 engines in '83 until they ran out and moved to the 2093.

Also, the kick lever you need is the same on all size bikes from I think '78-'81, all the non-primary kick engines have the same clutch cover and kick starter.

John, the bike in that eBay listing has a 250 engine in it, which has the new primary kick engine. It is most definitely NOT a 125/175 engine.

Some pics. First is my '82 125XC, engine tag #2040

My '83 175WR, exact same side cover and engine as the '82 125XC except for the countershaft splines, engine tag #2064

Finally, a picture of an '84 125CR, it is cosmetically different because of the water pump being part of the clutch cover, and the boss that stops the kick start lever on return is moved so the kick lever is rotated farther forward, but if you look at it closely, its the same cover as the air cooled bikes and would bolt directly on all the way back to a '77 125.

Excellent information, gentlemen. Thank you so much for enlightening me. Bike has since been disassembled for freshening. Everything is looking quite good at this point. So far, other than typical stuff like brakes shoes, have found only rear swingarm bushings in need of replacement. Stripped and painted the frame. Having a heck of a time getting the frame stripped off the forks, but we're gettin' there. Stripped the tank down to the alloy and had only one tiny little dent to fill.

Clutch cover came off to reveal just as Kartwheel described. Very interesting!
