• Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

GPS Mounting

Thought I'd start a thread to show the different methods of mounting a GPS and any potential issues you've experneiced with your method.

I mounted a Zumo 550 using the Ram handlebar clamp and a short extension with a ball for the Zumo backing plate to attach to.

Instead of clamping directly to the handle bar I clamped the Ram handle bar mount directly to the Crycra pro bend handlebar clamp mount just in front of where it meets the handlebar.

I'm assuming I have no issues with any front brake line interference but will take a closer look this week to determine if the front brake line is rubbing during compression.
I will say that the GPS has allowed me to take many 250+ mile day rides without any hesitation on getting lost or finding fuel. Without this device riding would be not even be a 1/4 of the fun. Think I need a spot next...

Good thread. I ride alone alot and my wife lets me out as long as I have a SPOT transceiver along with my GPS. Here's the whole cockpit:

The SPOT is mounted with a RAM mount on the mirror base:

The 60CSx is mounted to the Cyrca Probend handguard:

These positions work well for me and are protected by the handguards.

I'm using the ram system also great set up.
I went for a fitting that went under the hold down bolts for the handle bars.

The first try was the top bolt but after a hard ride through the bush and over logs etc....
I moved it to the lower bolt.
I found the brake cable was rubbing against the back of the unit,
All better now.
Man I love riding in the mountains with GPS and Backroad Mapbook
Even coming home and down loading the GPS to Google earth
Is pretty cool:thumbsup:

found another photo that I had from the side where you can get somewhat of an idea on the clearance issue from the front brake line. Haven't had an opportuntity to confirm that there is no interference but will verify.

Your GPS sits way further back than mine did.
But almost exactly where it sits now. It's amazing how versatile the
Ram system is.

This bike with a GPS has allowed me to do what I would dream about doing when 16 and and out riding... never do I regret the purchase!:thumbsup:

Is the Zumo 550 waterproof?

I have the Garmin Oregon 400 ann Nuvi 260W.

The Oregon is water proof but the Nuvi isnt.

I like the Oregon but like the big screen of the Nuvi. Im just worried to get the Nuvi wet.

I bought the Nuvi for my van/wife whatever. What a fantastic little unit.
For the Car Van etc.

I bought the Garmin GPSMAP 276C
for my bike.
Not worried about what street to turn on in 200yrds.:D
It's for the bush and fire roads.
Not even sure roads would show up on the Nuvi where I ride.

I have the North America street and topo maps for garmin. Both are loaded on my Nuvi and Oregon. I like that you can run both cart systems at the same time. If the road doesnt show up on the city maps, they usually show up on the topo's.

Like i said, I just wory that the Nuvi isnt waterproof.

I am going to buy the RAM Mount though. It looks like a sweet unit. We have them for some of our gear at work and we beat the mess out of them and they always stay in position.

Oh yeah, this is a gps mount thread.......

All I could think of seeing those nice calm ponds/rivers/lakes was what kind of lure I'd need to coax a pike or bass to hit. Beautiful scenery. Good incentive to go gpsing!
