• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Gunnar Gasser cheap copy warning ..........

Auto Lover ...
I'm sure this has been covered a year or two back, but I feel it needs covering again !
I had an issue at the weekend with a Gasser copy. These are the ones with the BLACK cover and does NOT have "Made in Sweden" cast into the body.
The plastic tangs on the throttle tube the hold the cable WILL break off sooner or later. Mine did on Sunday afternoon. Luckily the throttle was being closed at the time. It usually happens as you're opening it or WFO. It looks like it is caused by the tangs and plasic cover being moulded badly. It lets the throttle go past the "stop" when closing. This puts strain on the weak (read cheap crap) plastic. A small piece will eventually break off jamming the throttle.

I contacted the ebay seller that I bought the unit from yesterday. Had an email back from him today genuinely concerned about the problem. This is good. But there are a great deal of people selling these who don't know how dangerous the are, or do, and don't care.

There is a scary post from Firko (Mark Firkin) about what happens when it does go belly up !
The injury list is not good.
If you want me to post it I will.

I must stress that the good ones have a grey plastic top cover, and "Made in Sweden" cast into the body.

Only we can prevent th cheap C&*^nese knock offs from being bought. Pay more and get the good stuff. Hope you get it resolved.

Ok, I will post some pics as soon as I can find where my 2 year old has hidden the camera charger !
It is difficult to know the history of all the different top covers used by the genuine article. I am refering to the ones currently available.
I also have some old ones lurking somewhere in the shed. But, to my knowledge, all the genuine ones have "Made in Sweden" cast into the body.
The copies do not.

Below is the mail from Firko ........

Thanks Grouty, it's nice to be here.
Mate, I reckon I've become the International consumer advocate for banning those cheap'n'nasty Chinese Gunnar Gasser copies. In my 24 years in the VMX scene I've seen many an "Oh Shit ! " situation caused by those throttles malfunctioning at the worst possible time.
The problem (amongst others) is in the loop that holds the cable nipple snapping off, causing the nipple to turn and jam in the housing. This exciting phenonema usually (but not always) occurs when you're on full throttle, often with dire results. It's happened to me a couple of times before I had the life changing accident that put me off work for six months with a shattered elbow, 2 broken ribs, a ruptured sternum and a whole bunch of lesser injuries. I was practicing at our practice track aboard my methanol DT1 Yamaha, racing my mate on his modern when, while tapped out in 4th gear the throttle jammed, causing me to hit the berm at the end of the straight on full noise, face planting at least 20 feet from the launch berm momentarily before the bike which promptly landed on top of me, causing most of the physical damage.
If you're using a Chinese rip-off Gunnar Gasser it's not a matter of it maybe failing, it's a fact that it most definitely will when you least expect it. At Classic Dirt earlier this year I asked the inventor of the original Gunnar Gasser, Gunnar Lindstrom his thoughts on the Gasser rip-offs and he agreed that the quality was extremely poor and that it reflected badly on the excellent Swedish made real product. He reckoned that unfortunately it'd be an impossible task to take any legal action against the Chinese manufacturers because of the complexities of the Chinese legal system, in other words it's in the 'too hard basket'. All we can do is to try and get the message out there that the Chinese throttles are dangerous crap and hope that punters get wise to it before they get hurt.

One of mine has a transparent top. I think I bought it aftermarket 20 years ago. I don't really understand where you are describing them breaking but I have enough so I won't be ordering any. Some of the bikes have/had a magura one with gears if I recall maybe the 500 models?

Had to buy a new camera charger as the two year old has spirited it away somewhere :(

The two pictures below show the genuine article.
The first one has "Made in Sweden" cast into it.
The second shows the top.

The next series of pictures show the cheap, nasty and dangerous copy ....
First one shows the body without the "Made in Sweden", and if you look closely the broken part of the throttle tube.
SANY0734.jpg

The next shows the tube a little closer.

The last one shows how the tangs on the tube will go past the "stop". This will weaken the tangs and one WILL break off.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. It happens when you shut down the throttle past the stop. I ended up drilling a hole through the casting and putting a cotter pin in so it would get me through the event. Actually, it's still there. The cotter pin worked so good I forgot about it.
Your pictures are perfect, to show the problem.

Thanks Gord.
It does seem there are a few "doubters" here !
I have been racing since about 77, and have used genuine Gasser's for most of it. I foolishly didn't realise that I had bought a copy. Until the other week. I got away with it. Some have not been so lucky.
If I could stop this dangerous crap I would. But I can't. All I can do it make others aware. Maybe it will happen if enough people know, and don't buy them.
Anyway ...... if it stops raining enough, I am off to ride mine tomorrow :)
