Hey all, hoping someone with more mechanical experience can take a look at these photos to help me identify what I would consider a substantial amount of metallic/ magnetic flakes found on sump plug magnet during oil change.
Info on these flakes:
- They seem to be magnetized. ie: they are attracted to the pliers i was using to sort them for the attached photo.
- Quite thin and brittle (easilly can break into almost dust just by squeezing in fingers)
- The larger pieces have an almost welding slag look to them.
- I am unsure if the brown if rust or the metal, as I cleaned them with brake cleaner immediately before taking the photo.
- The biggest piece is approximately 6-7mm diameter, but there is a fair bit more small dust size that got trapped in the oil filter.
- The past 2 oil changes (at 27,xxx kms and 30,xxx kms) have revealed flakes of the same look and quantity.
My research suggests possibly a bearing, However I just replaced all the transmission bearings last summer, and everything else (crankshaft, clutch, flywheel, counter shaft) spin smoothly by hand, not indicating that there is an issue there. Top end all looks good as well. All of the trans gears and bushings also looked fine when I had the case split last summer.
I am at a loss, and am also bringing them into my local bike shop to see if they have any suggestions. But any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I absolutely loveee this bike but if this continues on the next oil change I might have to consider selling it.
