  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Help needed - 2008 TE450 won't run off idle.

I recently came back from overseas while my bike sat idle for 4 months. Before I left I put fuel stabilisor in and did an oil change.

When I tried to start the bike the battery was dead, just the relay clicking and the fuel pump didn't go. So I charged the battery and took it for a 5 minute ride and all seemed well.

The only thing I did to the bike after the 5 minute ride was play with the air screw a little bit to try to lower the idle speed. I THINK I ended up putting it back to where it was. The idle didn't really seem to change at all so I gave up and left it.

This morning I went to take it for a ride, It took more effort than normal to start (more than the day before) and I ended up having to give it a little bit of throttle to get it to idle initially with the choke on. It idled for about 30 seconds then died. I started it again and it idled fine on choke and then off choke.

When I tried to ride the bike it cut out as soon as I started to release the clutch. I started it again and revved it in neutral and it seemed ok and again it died under load. I managed to get it going by using plenty of revs and being very gentle with the clutch, however as I rode down the road it went from full power to cutting out, I'd drop the clutch and bump start it and then full power for a second then cut out.

After that I could start it for a while and it would idle but revving it in neutral it was all over the place and it would die every time I let out the clutch.

Then after a few minutes the fuel pump started not charging up the lines and there was no ignition, I tried to kick start and after a couple of kicks the fuel pump could be heard and the bike started, idled and died.

This got progressively worse to the point the fuel pump did not go, I pushed the bike back to the trailer and about 5 minutes later I tried again, the fuel pump worked and the bike idled and revved in neutral for about 10 seconds before dying.

It is not losing power more just dying completely.

So before I try randomly pulling things apart I'm chasing some advice. Things I am considering:

1. I buggered up the ECU by adjusting the air screw.
2. Issue with the fuel pump/ignition/connections somewhere.
3. Issue with some sort of vacuum in the tank (mainly because if I leave the bike sit for a while it seems to go)

Any advice appreciated.

I agree, check for air leak....maybe spray some starting fluid or carb cleaner around boot while bike runs to see if you get an idle change.

If I leave it idle the idle is steady at around 1550-1600 rpm.

When I got it back and tried to start it the fuel pump is pressuring up and the bike starts ok, although I have to use a little throttle which doesn't seem right on a FI bike. sometimes it runs for a few seconds and dies then the next time I rev the engine a few times then it dies.

The confusing part for me was when the fuel pump stopped pressuring up the fuel line, could this also be cause by an air leak??

Maybe a bad temp sensor ...known fault in some bikes.

Another thing to check might be fuel pump mounting in tank and wiring. They were known to loosen.

Either can be searched on CH with a lot of discussion.

Have a think about your battery. It was dead as apparently. Most older batteries will take a surface charge but not have a lot of grunt to kick the beast over. get an ampmeter onto the battery and start with that.
I tend to run my bike at about 1400 rpm

I keep coming back to the fact that after I charged the battery I took it for a ride for 5-10 minutes and it was fine then when I got back I fiddled with the air mixture screw (not sure of the exact name but I believe it is basically just a manual adjustment air leak that changes the mixture). The next time I took it out this issue happened straight from the get go...surely it can't be just coincidence?

Nothing else was changed on the bike and there was only a couple of days between rides? Adjusting the screw did F all to the idle speed anyway. Could it have effected the mapping/ECU? (excuse my ignorance, I can do an oil change and change a tire, normally I would just take it to the shop but I'm determined to learn to do more on the bike)

The only other thing I did was put petrol in it. Maybe there is a problem with the breather, I'll have a look at that.

Well the problem appears to be solved. I pulled the headlight off and had a look at all the connections, the wiring from the kill switch/starter looked a bit crappy. On closer inspection it was a bit loose so I sprayed it with WD40, taped it with electrical tape and plugged it back in. Voila!

What is that saying about tape and WD40, I think its very true!

Thanks for all the tips, sorry I didn't try this simple fix before I posted on the forum!
