  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

How do you install axle block sliders?

I have an 08 510 smr and I don't see how the SME axle block slider goes onto the left side of the bike. The axle block on that side does not come off of the axle. Any thoughts? Am I an idiot?

Are you sure the block did not chemicially bond to the axle.. I know I have seen this on other models.. just a thought

Chow, Carl

When you finally separate the block from the axle. Make sure you use grease or neverseize when reassemble it.

It does come off, with force.

Is there an adhesive holding it on? Any suggestions on how to apply enough force. I have tried heating it and hitting it with a mallet and won't come off. Maybe I should do some pushups and try again in a couple weeks?

Here I'll try...:oldman:The block is aluminum right. Axle is steel. This is how I changed out my steel cylinder sleeves in a aluminum head on my drag bike. Turned head upside down and the steel sleeves fell on the shop floor. Aluminum will expand quicker than steel. It's also a timing thing...too long and the steel will heat up and expand too, to short and the aluminum won't expand enough. You will also need a piece of pipe that will go over the axle and still catch most of the block and a good mallet and 2x6.
Wait till the wife is not home::busted:....put your axle & block in the freezer for a couple of hrs first... preheat oven to 500F or higher take your block and axle from freezer and put it in the oven guessing for about 10-15 minutes just a guess. I would suggest a fairly good pair of welders gloves for the next step. Take axle out of oven stand axle up on the 2x6 (outside so if you miss or drop axle you don't burn the kitchen floor.:busted:) place pipe over axle and smack it hard with the hammer.
Remember once the axle heats up or your block cools down you will have lost your advantage. Good Luck.

Finally got it. Heat and mallet over and over and over and over again. SME should warn the buyer what a pain in the ass that is.

Well, it is the stock piece that is such a pain. It's kind of nice that the SME one stays put too, makes it easier to deal with removing/replacing the axle I think.

This engineering comes directly from the enduro world for rapid wheel changes without all the pieces falling off, including the wheel spacers that stay put unlike some other machines.

I always thought it was permanently together and made for an easy change. I guess I'll just keep it that way.
