    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I have an SMS 630, I did all the "normal" power-up mods (airbox, sensor removal, resistor) and brought it to my dealer, who hooked it up to his laptop, via a usb cable that attached behind the headlight surround. What he told me is that this "software" he had allows him to tweak the fuel injection much like jetting a carb....pilot jet/main/needle. He adjusted it, I took it for a ride, he tweaked it again, I took it for a ride......anyway.....What's the name of this software, and where do you get it? And why would anyone need to use a PowerCommander, or any other black box if the FI is adjustable via this software?

I can adjust a carb pretty well, but fuel injection is a little bit of a mystery.....
 
I had this installed in my bike yesterday. Makes a huge difference. Well worth the cash....

That is iBeat software at about $450 and you need to hook up to a computer to make adjustments.

JD PowerSurge tuner costs $210 and you can make changes on the fly.

Basically, you can use the iBeat software from Husky to change your CO2 settings in 3 "areas" of the map. As you said, it is roughly equivalent to changing the pilot/needle height/main jet - which should be sufficient for most people. From what I can make out through, all you are doing is varying the amount of fuel injected in the first third, 2nd third, and third third of the generic curve. So there isn't much you can do about the shape of the curve and the way you want your bike to behave.

That's where the PowerCommander V comes in as it lets you vary the fuel delivery at a much finer grain level - so it effectively lets you fine tune more points along the stock curve to get it looking closer to what you want.

So if the power curve/behaviour of the stock map you have on your FI is fine for you, then all you will need to do is get your CO2 levels right in the 3 zones and you'll be laughing. If you are a bit more of a fanatic though, the PowerCommander (or other Black Box tuner) comes into its own.
