• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

husqvarna wr430 hangin idle

jo360

Husqvarna
AA Class
ok recently finished rebuilding a air cooled wr430 engine its on its last oversize 74.5, new bore, new piston, new bearings and seals throughout, carby clean as a whistle.runs great until hot and then starts with a hangin idle.
the rpm stays hangin for about ten seconds then drops down to normal.
mods done:
standard muffler shortened by 150mm.
head ported and matched to gaskets and cases.
74.5mm wossner piston.
thought it may have been a air leak but this did not show up on the leak test i did also checked all the seals at 20psi with soapy water and picked up a tiny leak at manifold that has been fixed but thats it she is air tight.
i have manged to stop the hangin idle by jetting it out increasing the size of the pilot to 60 ,main is 450,
so any ideas could it be non carby related, or maybe the carb iitself i know the chrome on the slide is worn away on one side.
i installed a decomp valve to the head but this again checked out fine, all my other bikes run a small pilot and work great.
the 430 starts easily hot or cold just cannot believe it would require such a large pilot, oh and plug looks good no fouling.

Is it 87.45 mm piston for an 87.50 bore?

That isn't unusual for a two cycle engine, I was quite frustrated getting a pole pruner (chainsaw on a stick) to idle down, rev up properly and run at idle and full. Eventually i got it sort of good and put the limiter caps back. Some of my devices didn't care about switching to no ethanol gasoline this one was quite fussy it seems. Have you moved the clip on the needle? Not idling down was one of the things I had to get right dialing in my pwk 39mm carb on my 88 husky.

The heavy brass slide may well have worn the bore of the carb as well especially if it has been on there through all of those oversizes. I don't ever recall having that issue with the round slide micuni, you might try a 3.0 cut away on the slide some day and see if you like that better, one can be made out of a 2.5.

One can click on the edit spot near the bottom of a post if you are logged in instead of making corrections via another post. I do it quite a lot. The ability to edit isn't limited to 20 minutes or something like that on here.

thanks fran, piston is 87.45 even with the 60 it doesn,t blow smoke, getting spooge at the exhaust manifold due to worn out spigots so that will be next on the fix list, i have a tm38 that i can adapt a inlet manifold to and see if this helps or at least eliminate any round slide worn bore question.i will try the needle in its highest position its mid way at the moment, timing set at 2mm btdc.the cut away was a number 2 that i ground back to a three transition from idle to 1/4 is clean and all the way up, revs up extremely well plenty of bottom end power but just concerned that the large pilot may be masking another issue.

ok problem solved, ripped the keihin pwk from the gg200 and fitted that in place of the vm, will be fine tuning but no more hangin idle, must have been pulling air around the slide or holding the slide against the bore at high vacuum.
