  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

keeping finding coolant on my 06 sm610

on the cylinder head near the sparkplug of my 06 sm610 with 22k and I'm having to all coolant once a month. its never much just a little wet with a greenish tint on the head. more annoying then bad but nonetheless i'd like to fix the problem but not sure where to begin...any suggestions?

i've looked around the head and, though im not sure where its coming from, it seems to be only in and around the spark plug cavity. i cleaned the bike and baby powdered the engine to find the source of the leak to no avail. any thoughts..?

When the 06's first came out, I remember reading all about that and if I recall correctly, most folks just torqued the head bolts to spec and that fixed it. Some had to get a new gasket I recall.

I have a 06 SM610 also and mine has never done it. Go figure.

It is probably being wind pushed from seepage out either of the 2 top radiator hose clamps, or the hose clamp on the thermo bypass housing. It is hard to see that last one.

After some time the interior rubber on my '07 hoses cracked through to the fiber reinforcement layer and coolant weeps out along the fiber out the ends and drips slowly. Also central hose bend right behind the coolant reservior developed a small 1/4" cut, likely from wear against the sharp plastic molding of the reservoir. A new hose was about $28. make sure you get the correct hose if you ever replace it, the '06 and '07 require the version with a fan thermo switch tube end in it.

firebolter, what gasket are you talking about, headgasket?

Yes. There were quite few that the "blue" coolant you see dried up on the cyl was from small leak on the head gasket. Check/Torque those bolts to spec and see if that clears it.

start with a clean, dry bike. ride it briskly for 15 mins. to build up pressure. then shut it off and grab some baby powder. then puff it eveywhere coolant can leak from. then go for a smoke and come back later. if it's leaking externally youll find it. kinda messy but it works. if you have a smooth concrete garage floor do this outside or you'll end up on yer keester. :p

or call uptite. he's the 610 king.

He said he tried that :busted: well the baby powder part anyway!

good grief, yer right. i had to re-read it 3 times to see that!

getting old blows. sorry gang. my bad.

firebolter: i will retorque the the head gasket bolts. Are those the four black bolts extending from out of the jug? Should I loosen the bolts and then retorque them or just retorque the bolts?

pvduke: i cleaned and powdered but the powder didn't lay as easily as i thought it would. maybe i should put the powder on a piece of paper and spray air across the powder to get the powder more dispersed.

Yes that's them, I do not have the torque specs with me, but I would just set the wrench to the proper spec and do each bolt (cross pattern) and see if they are set. No real need to loosen them first, but you certainly could if you like.

I went back to SuperMotoJunkie and was re-reading. There are a bunch of post on that site regarding this isue when it first popped up back in 06.

fyi- to propperly torque a fastner it must be moving so..ya might have to back it off just a tiny bit if it aint loose already. call george @ uptite with any ?. he's the 610 king.

firebolter: any links to the smj site? I haven't had much luck finding it or using the thread I started.

I looked at my manual on torquing the head gasket and couldn't understand what the torque value was. Any thoughts..?

"Always use a new cylinder head gasket (1) when assembling.
Apply GN Plus Molikote on the cylinder head asssembly nuts.
Assemble the cylinder head.
Tight the nuts (2) whilst following a cross-over pattern and in steps (a, b,c, d)
(10 Nm- 1 Kgm- 7.2 ft/lb).
Tight the nuts (3) (10 Nm- 1 Kgm- 7.2 ft/lb).
Tight the nuts (2) again whilst following a cross-over pattern and in steps (a,
b,c, d) (37 Nm+90°-3.8 Kgm+90°-27.5 ft/lb+90°).
Tight the nuts (3) again (25 Nm- 2,5 Kgm- 18.4 ft/lb).
Tight the screws (4) (11 Nm- 1,1 Kgm- 7.9 ft/lb)."
