  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

kickstarting a 09 450

ok well i watched the guy do it pretty easy at the dealership and i dont know if i could do it for a million dollars rite now. i dont need to kick it over rite now but id like to get it down to where i can if the need ever arises. not sure if im not doin something rite or theese are a pain to kick over anyway. any tips would be appreciated, thanks

The trick with modern 4 strokes is you are better off rolling it to top dead center on the compression stroke. This is where you will find the most resistance against the kick starter. This will give you the greatest chance to have it fire off right away. You can do this by just pushing the kick starter over with your foot and then you feel the resistance on it. Once you hit this point return the kick starter to the top of its stroke and kick it. You need to be sure to let the fuel pump prime first though. Just learn the trick to starting your bike and you should be able to do it with ease when you need it.

On multiple occasions I have seen people just kicking away at their bike trying to start it up and then a buddy of mine goes over and brings it to top dead center and kicks it and it fires right up.

What ive found (carb mode) from cold; is to pull choke, 2 twists of the throttle (accelerator pump squirts) - close throttle and then kick.
Usually fires off the second kick. Now if it were a KTM - forget it lol

thanks for the responses. ive been bringin up to tdc then kickin it. a cpl of times it sounded like it wanted to but didnt quite fire off. moto, i have the compression lever and use it when tryin to kickstart it. ill keep at it, im sure its probably just workin out the lil stuff like you said dirtrider

I belive you have a TE450? If yes i do have the same problem. I think the problem is the TPS, we have to adjust it to get the good injection timing. Thats what i think but i might be wrong.

Since it is carbed that will make a difference. A little throttle should help it light up. You don't want to get too crazy with it as you will flood it and then have to deal with that.
