• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Kickstarting issues

Hey guys, I have a 05 SMR 510 and just seeing if your having the same starting issues I am with the kick start. My battery has died on me a few times, and only have been able to start the bike once with the kicker. I am no newb to starting thumpers with a kick, but this is baffling me. I will do 3-5 kicks with the decomp lever in, go to TDC and wale on the kicker. Id say about 25% of the time it sounds like it will start but it doesn't. Im wondering if the condensor is not working to provide adequate spark or what. I have tried kicking with and w/o the hot start pulled. I dont give it gas while kicking, I dont want the kick back or a split case, lol :)

Any ideas!?

Replace your decompressor actuator. I have replace 4 on my te510. A slight amount of ware will cause this to happen. Each time I replace them they looked like a refined unit. And every time I replace one the starting issue was resolved. The last one I replaced looked like the best design yet. Hopefully this one will last for a long time.

I have a manual decompression, unless your saying when its released I'm not getting enough compression? If that's what your saying, I have plenty of comp when kicking her over.

Are you talking about something else?

Like TE's, your SMR should be equipped with both an auto and manual compression release. The manual compression release just doesn't cut it. To get these things to fire easily, your auto compression release needs to be in top shape. It allows the big bore to spin enough times to fire up by holding the exhaust valve open for a split second during revolutions. It doesn't take a lot of ware on the auto compression actuator before you start to experience hard starting. A worn actuator will suck life out of any battery. Just pop open the valve cover and you will see the auto compression actuator slip off the rocker arm as you slowly turn the bike over by hand. I attached a picture of the 4 units I have replaced. The latest version is at the bottom of the attached pic. They are all a little different. However, the latest version appears to have the best design yet.
