• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Knee braces or knee pads

I'm pretty new at this motorcycle stuff and an old guy that wishes to stay relatively injury free in my new habit, erm, hobby!

I have a set of Astar knee pads right now that I need to replace due to worn Velcro and a nasty stench:D

The neck brace thread has reminded me to update my safety gear....

Here's the question, what's the benefit to knee braces as opposed to knee pads for a guy like me with no knee issues?

an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
If you had to take a year off due to injury and surgery, what would your enthusiam( sorry for spelling error ) level be?
Race mode- what would your race mode be?
Age- do you have 40 or 20 or 10 or ? years left to ride at what level?
Would it be worth it to spend $600-700 to get that year back?

Knee pads are for working on your bike where it's rocky, lol. Kidding aside, if ya want to stay injury free & enjoy this sport for a long time then knee braces will be on the list also. I just picked up the RS8s from EVS, a mid-level non custom type. May try the prescription route with the CTIs if I catch my doc on a good day, haha.

I tried braces after a knee injury (not bike related) and couldn't get on with them, found them too restrictive but I know others who wear them with no issues. What riding are you doing? Racing or riding for fun? Pads will be fine for trail riding, if you're racing then I would give braces a go. I've been racing with pads for years and had some big 'offs' my knees are still ok at 43, the rest of me is falling apart though!!!

Either is better than nothing. Personally I have settled for the pads and are happy with that. Tried braces once and felt constricted. Braces, I am sure become second nature over time but the Pads are an acceptable middle ground solution imho.

Here's my first hand experience. I'm 44 and have been back in the sport for the last 10 years. I do about one Enduro a year and ride mostly with my buddies for fun. I've been riding with Moose knee pads up till August of this year. In August I was on a 30 minute ride behind the house and hooked my left foot on a little 2" tree and "wrenched" my left knee. The Ortho Dr said it was hyperextended and sprained. I took 3 months off the bike and rode my bicycle in the basement doing rehab stuff.

With all that said, I purchased 2 new EVS "SX02" knee braces for $119 each. They took a few rides to get used to the feel but now I can't even tell they're on. The SX02 braces are a scuba suit type material with the metal braces on each side. They have three nice velcro straps and provide a lot of support. Also, each brace is adjustable at the hindge so you can set when they hit the fully locked position (this prevents the hyperextension). Again, it was the best bang for the buck when I did my research.

I can see a brace protecting more than just a pad but for me , overkill ... But I do need the hard-shelled on my knees and elbows ... Just the cheap stuff and they'll get tossed before too long here ... And there has been at least 2 times I fell over and hit some rocks this yr without any bone damage ... About all my crashes are low speed so it would be very unlucky to do alot of damage to me ...

A knee injury is one of the most painful injuries you can have, and it’s one of the longest to recover from (recovery time can vary from a couple of days to weeks to months or even years). So why even risk a knee injury while riding? Wear the right protective motorcycle helmet and motorcycle gear, including knee braces of course, and prolong your years of racing, jumping, or whatever else you like to do on your bike.

Dang Tinken.......wtf man thats harsh!!!
Anyway I wore the older lace type Asterisk
http://www.asterisk.com/buy/protection.html
happily for years until they just fell to pieces (I never knew they had a rebuild policy!!).

Then I had a nice fitting pair of Pod MX
http://www.podmx.com/
that I got from a friend for a stud deal, they were also worn happily until they fell apart .The right one saved my leg bigtime and not from hyperextension, Tecate Enduro 2010 I nailed a downed log as I passed at speed and it actually broke the carbon fiber frame under my knee, it was a very hard hit that amounted to nothing more than bleeding from the sharp edges on the CF frame as rode the rest of the race with it cracked in 2. The Pod absorbed all the shock energy, without a good knee pad/ in this case Pod MX knee brace, I think my lower bone would have at the least cracked.

I am currently wearing Thor force pds that are not as hard framede braces but they do have bracing properties. They have velcro neprene wraps with elastic straps and have nice hinges and good solid plastic impact resistant outer shells.
These are the Thors in my kit bag now

Holy cow these things are pricey!

So, good info so far thanks. Do these stop sideways deflection? Is that the main benefit here?

I know a little about knee problems.
I've had 4 surgeries on my R knee, and avoided it on my L (non bike related injuries) I use pads now and feel safer with them.
I wear these ones and they seem to be well made and durable.

I strongly recommend knee braces. Some people get them paid for through their insurance companies. I got my new ones for free from Donjoy  My name happens to be Don Joy and they wanted my facebook account so I made a deal for new braces!

Yeah, I need to get these too. A few years ago went off an unexpected drop at relatively low speed and lost my right foot peg (sucky pegs) and my leg swung back and then came flying forwards for a crushing blow against the foot peg just above the top of my boots. The gash was minor, but I'm not so sure the bone underneath was not crushed or fractured, it took a good six months before that spot on my shin felt normal again.

Well that's a cool way to get some!

Pads right? No lateral support?

Sorry, got the point across though! Didnt know if you heard about the guy on the quad on GP race 7, no knee braces and almost lost his leg. Had to be helicoptered out to the hospital, was pretty gruesome. I wear knee braces with hard protector caps. I see guys who land on sharp rocks and puncture there knee caps a lot. Even if you buy the cheap knee pads with hard caps, do it, seriously.
