• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Lights on my 73 WR250

Gord

Husqvarna
AA Class
Is there a somewhat easy and affordable way to put working lights (front and rear) on my 73 WR250?
I'm not concerned about what is supposed to be on there. I just want to be able to register it for local rides and races. A simple headlight and tail light. I guess I would prefer original looking but at this point, universal lighting will do.
What do I need?
Are there any wiring diagrams available?
Does anyone here have any equipment to sell, (lights, bar switches, harness's)?
Any help is appreciated.

You can get a nice preston petty front number plate with a light from stricktly hodaka and maybe even a taillight too. The headlight isn't cheap but it's period correct for early 70's. Or search ebay, there is a lot of lighting on there. You really only need minimal wiring unless you want a brake light and high/low beam. Run a wire from the mag to the headlight and split it back to the taillight. You can put a toggle switch for on/off if you want to turn it off.

If you have the stock Femsa ignition take a look through the flywheel ans see if you have one or two coils.
If so the coil with the larger wiring wraped around it is the lighting coil. That's where your 6V 35W power supply will come from. The other side of your lighting circuit will come from grounding a wire to the chassis. Usually at the top coil mount is where I ground everything. If your missing the lighting coil they are on
ebay all the time or at Vintage Husky.

I saw an old article about installing the lighting kit on thr 76 250WR. The wiring was simple : yellow wire to headlight and the lower watt lead to taillight

The lighting is on the your '73 coming off the stock generator is about the same as my 87 430wr which is pretty dull, then you will probably want to look into an MZB ignition. They supposedly have a lot better output at idle and lower rpms than the stock set-up. The price of an MZB is probably 450 to 500 which sounds pretty expensive. However, a few months ago I was riding my 87 430 up to the weekly Stateline Riders meeting and I had someone cut me off pretty good. I almost klobbered their front left fender. I believe they might not have realized how close I was to them because at mild to moderate rpms my headlight is pretty yellow. Another member of this forum did a nice job with good results on installing an MZB ignition and bigger headlight. He posted some videos. I plan to do the same to my '73 450wr. I recently got a street title through Massachusetts RMV to maybe do some dual sports next year.

evcross0 has been helping me out. Apparently I have a 360/390 Motoplat, replacing the original Femsa. I have a spare yellow and white wire to work with to get front and rear lights.
I do have an MZB on another motorcycle, my 72 Penton/Wassell Trials bike, that has never failed me, regardless of how deep a stream I've crossed. Great spark and lots of juice.
Thanks for the help folks.
