I'm looking for a riding buddy for trips to Ocotillo wells and the
Anza Borrego Desert
I've been riding alone some at Ocotillo Wells for a half dozen trips.
But on my last trip there in the spring I went with a friend who was
visiting from out of town. He had a massive crash and broke in
collarbone in 5 places and we needed to get the Rangers for the
extraction and then it was a long day to get him out to a hospital and
then home! Thankfully all was OK, if painful.
At any rate, this has motivated me to try to find a riding buddy!
While I've been very cautious and carry a good set of emergency gear
(including a SPOT GPS, GMRS radio and cell phone), it's definitely
safer to ride with a buddy.
So here I am posting like it is a personal ad, looking for a
compatible riding friend.
I'm 49, and a good novice rider. I have substantial riding experience
on the street (I road raced when younger and do vintage road rallies
on classic machinery now). But I'm very new to the dirt. I took Rich
Oliver's Mystery school and got hooked. Bought a "play bike" a little
CRF150 and used that for a while, and outgrew the cheap suspension and
small wheels. I just upgraded to a Husqvarna TE250 (with a street
plate!). I've only had the Husky out for a shakedown run last spring,
and my friend was promptly injured, so that ended that trip.
I'd say I'm a "trail rider". I want to ride the trails and check out
the sites. Learning how to slide and handle the bike dynamics is
important to me. I'm not jumping anything, no motocross tracks, can't
really wheelie (yet), and am scared of steep hills. ;-) I'm old enough
that I don't want to get really hurt. But I do fall over with some
regularity. My biggest issue is fatigue, in that it takes a lot of
energy while learning, and I'm not doing hundred mile days or
anything. I probably do 2 or 3 rides totally 20 to 40 miles a day in
the desert. I'm probably not as bad as this all sounds. ;-) I suspect
I'm an OK trail rider.
I always go to Ocotillo during the week (no crowded weekends) and my
wife usually comes and hangs out happily at the camp. We spend the
evenings with dinner at Carlee's and the Palm Desert hotel in Borrego
Springs. But this year we may try some camping too. Usually we go for
two nights and two days of riding.
Ideally I'm looking for another rider just like me. Younger or older
is fine. And your wife or girlfriend/partner is free to join us too.
Ideally you also ride a bike with a plate so we can go anywhere. I'll
wait for you and you wait for me. I'm a non-smoker, no drugs.
Ibuprofen is good. Some beer and scotch AFTER the riding and driving
is over.
