  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi guys, just picked up a 2007 TE450 yesterday with 470 kays on it ( 19 hours) from a Dealer here in Australia.

Took it for a ride yesterday about 50 klms ( 20 road & 30 offroad) & today did 200 klms ( 120 road 80 offroad ) & when i got home from the ride i did an oil & filter change, well i removed 2x drain plugs & not even 400 mls of oil came out & it was pretty dirty, no big pieces of metal on drain plug or in the strainers or filter.

I bought the bike from a Dealer & stupidly assumed they wouldn't sell a bike without checking over it first but i should've checked before just riding obviously.

The picture is how much oil came out in a beer bottle, the pan i drained it into was already a bit dirty & had some brake fluid in it so oil looks a bit worse than it really was but still came out pretty bad ...

Bike was vibrating a bit above 80 kph before & left hands with a bit of a buzz but feels alot smoother now.

So have i damaged the engine ? do these bikes have a low oil pressure light that should've come on if pressure was low ? have i dodged a bullet & i'm extremely lucky to find this now or have i not dodged a bullet & done some damage ??

cheers
chinski

That engine is tough, hopefully it was synthetic oil, that is a big advantage. Pull the valve cover off and rotate the engine, looking at the cam lobes, especially the exhaust, see if there is any pitting. You are probably OK.

Thanks OldHuskyRider, bike is in shop getting new front springs for my weight ( sag only 67mm ) & oil leaking out of bottom of fork...

will remove rocker cover & have look when i get it back, i work on diesel engines ( marine ) for a living & the way the husky was still running with low oil personally i think it'll be OK, fingers crossed.

Also got to say thanks too for your epic bike thread on your bike, i read it start to finish over a few days & was part of the reason i got a TE450, & part of the reason i went 2007 carby model too haha :) that was such a great story from your bikes beginnings & all the way through until you gave it to your mate, was a great read, like a good book you can't put down each time i read a few more pages i would say "thats it for today" then at bottom of the page i would want to know what happened next & the "one more page" voice would chime in haha ! cheers mate :)

checked condition of cam lobes visually today & all looks good, have done around 80 kays since changing oil & hasn't lost any, doesn't blow any smoke.

will get a service manual & check valve clearnaces next.

all seems ok after the low oil running, on a side note got the front springs changed to suit my weight & the suspension guy said the while compression damping valve /shims had come loose, there was oil dripping out of the bottom of the fork when i took it in, anyway he set it up for me & my riding style & this thing feels so great now, like a different bike, soaks up bumps & rocky riding like just floating over the top & can ride harder then my YZ125 even in tight stuff, loving the bike !

Had an 06 model they are tough as nails. Just keep the oil changes to 500kms and regular air filter changes and she will go forever.

When I got my 2007 TE, I changed the oil and did not get any better than you ( about half a liter of dirty black oil ). I poured fresh synthetic motorex , but it looks like less than what the manual says is needed ( not sure if the manual said it, maybe it was the dealer actually... ). Anyway, I noticed my bike tends to lose oil when it is on the side stand ( due to a shot oring behind the sproket ) . It does not leak a lot when the bike is on a motocross stand, so maybe you could look behind the sprocket and check if it is greasy
