    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Lower bearing steering head 1986 Husky 400

Just began a restoration project on a 1986 400 xc. Thought I would pull the triple tree and check out/grease up the bearings prior to painting frame.

I got the triple tree off but I don't know how to get the lower bearing off the shaft. The steering head shaft goes through the lower triple tree and appears to be secured by a spacer and a circlip. Is that head shaft suppose to come out of that lower half of the tree?

It seems as though it should so the bearing could be cleaned or changed out.

Your help is appreciated.

The bearing should lift off the top of the stem without removing the stem from the lower tree.
 
I had to cut off the cage and hammer on it with a chisel, was rusted in good.
Great bike BTW got 2 :) 1 has no front end, but a good spare runner.

I finding that mine is rusted on good and to move it will require chisel and hammer.

My question now is that bearing a press fit or will the replacement simply slide down over the steering stem...easily:)
 
Press fit, but simple to deal with.
My trick i use is for many bearings is to reuse the old inner race on top of the new bearing upside down and tap side to side with angle iron or a pipe.
 
I have used a pneumatic cutoff wheel, Use it gently and know when to stop. I have done it twice without scarring the lower triple so far. Most I end up here in Norteast are neglected and badly rusted. Actually you can try soaking the bearing in Evapo-Rust. I did that with electric motor bearings that rusted solid from a basement flood. They work nice now. Just wash all grease out first and soak for a couple days. Could save you a lot of grief with other rusted items you run across
 
As a last resort - and only if you have access to at least 10 tonnes of force, you can push out the whole stem from the triple clamp. They are mighty tight though and you would do well to heat it up too. If you go down this route, be very sure to support the tripleclamp so that it does not get bent in the process and make sure that the whole lot is square to the press before you push!!!

Also, don't leave out the 2mm spacer under the bottom bearing - as it keeps the tripleclamps clear of the Headstock. I mention this as I may have done this myself in the past..... Only to have to disassemble it all again. Doh!

i left the spacer out as well and so far it hasnt caused any obvious grief...praying praying:rolleyes:
