    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

hi guys, just found the forum...i'm a hopeful future tr owner, meantime a lurker.

here's my question.

I currently ride a '12 yamaha super tenere, and love it. Fantastic on gravel (k60's kick ass), road, twisties.
In the next year, i'm looking at getting into a smaller dp bike (not selling the ST, like it way too much). My possible candidates are the TR(new), and the KTM 690r (most likely used).
I would use the bikes to ride to a local riding spot (45km one way), do some mild to technical trails, and head home. Commuting back and forth to work, and some short trips two up with my wife.
I would also like to pack the bike for a few days off road trips.
What are your current thoughts on the bike?
I sat on one at the bike show, kicked tires, loved the look, fit finish, seat was decent, rear rack looks good, the pipes look ok, might be a bit heavy, overall very impressed talked to the local dealer, I will arrange a ride on a demo later this year (when spring shows up:)) they will sell for $8000 plus tax and pdi here in the great white north, so it's a good price imo.
The aftermarket is empty now for the bike, since it just got introduced,
but i see a few forum members are allready working on skid plates and the like.
Reliablility is a question mark, but the rotax is a proven engine (built in china?)
The red head has some cool features when it comes to valve check etc..
I have owned a 08 KLR since new, no oil issues, did not find it exciting, sold it within 2500km
a 2006 DR 650, with low k's, did a bunch of addons to it, did not fit me either..low on power, and a bit...boring..sold.
a 2007 DR 400, fantastic in the woods/technical stuff, literal pain in the ass, even with a sargent seat..sold
a 99 KLR, great beater bike, could fix it with a spoon and fork need be, much to the grumblings of my wife, sold the bike after putting a good 15xxxkm on it

i am jealous of the super tenere ! We only got this one in the US a few months ago. I love their slogan: "Who needs the travel channel?". Your iding profile looks to be a nice match for the 650 Husqvarna, and it should have a lot more character and better attention retention than the KLR and similar bikes. You will not be able to fix it with a spoon, and the aftermarket will take some time to catch up, but the price, the styling, and the exotic nature of the beast should make up for this. Good luck with the hunt.

Yeah, the tenere is a great bike, love it, but it gets to be a handful off road. I have caughty myself a few times doing 120km + on gravel, with out really worrying.
I've done as much as possible to shed weight, but where I loose it (pipe, and other odds and ends) I gain in other area (skid plate etc..)

Getting my Terra later this winter. Just cant find better compromise for the type of riding I'm doing most (commute + gravel/two-track offroad + some travel).

Where are you located Mariusz? I'm in Calgary, AB. When are you picking up the new wheels exactly?
I bought my ST out of Great Falls MT, for a substantial 25% saving over buying it locally. Set out on a friday afternoon, and had the bike back home the following day. Great way to save some serious coin.
I was looking at pricing in the US, and it's a $1000 difference, I would need to pay tax at the border (5%, plus RIV of $200), so I don't think that would be worth the trip for me. Here in Calgary, they are $8000 plus 5% tax and PDI, so i'm guessing about $8700 out the door.
My biggest hurdle is the weight of the TR (368 lb dry) vs the 690R of 308 lb dry. These numbers might not be accurate, but again I feel comfy on a 570 lb pig.
Did you consider the KTM 690 enduro? I'm going to bullshit with a local dude that has two of them, he's got one for sale with 35xxxkm on it, nicely kept, akro pipe $6500 obo. I'll keep you posted
 
Hi Greg, I am out in Moose Jaw Sask and just put down a deposit on the Terra. I got it for alittle over 8K OTD. I am not sure if you can import the TE or TR line of Husky's from the US. They are not on the RIV list of importable vehicles, so no luck there. The KTM sounds nice, if you are doing alot of dirt riding vs road it might be the way to go. KTM holds its value pretty good also.

That's a great price, the local dealer quoted me 8, but was not specific about the rest, GST, pdi etc.
I would not bother going to the states to save a grand. The tenere was worthwhile, since I cut 4 grand off the canadian msrp.

Well, I'm still located in Poland, thanks God :applause: Trying to pick my Terra as it arrives from the factory (putting my deposit down just now). Should be 3 weeks.

If you do more technical offroading that might be worth considering. For pavement, expecially two-up as you said, might be difficult on 690.
