• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Magneto questions

My 85 500xc has a SEM ignition. My question is, what do the magnets on the smaller diameter in the magneto do, as opposed to the larger diameter magnets? I looks like there is one pickup fir the smaller diameter and multiple pickups on the larger area. Is one set for lighting coils? I am not planning on running lights, and would like to lighten it up

Bigger dia is generator/lighting and smaller is ignition.
Don't chop it up as a good one is hard to find.

I have/had a feeling those had the motoplat mini 6. Upon reviewing the 81-88 teck data sheet I downloaded from here it would appear only the four stroke models got a sem for 1985. Does it have two yellow wires? If so most likely it like the 87-88 250 ones with two 70 watt output. I kind of thought that one was less reliable than the motoplat mini 6. Might be kind of a shame to cut it up. I don't know what is going on with those four stroke advance timing specs. It also appears the cr modeks don't have a lighting coil.

There is drilling evident to indicate the rotor has been ballanced isn't there?

Whether with a 10 pound flywheel and a one pound piston even going to an internal rotor would really matter is up for discussion in my opinion.

Put loctite on the little bolts that hold stuff to that right case in that area, they have a habbit of coming loose.

magnets were cracked on the outside. also had itermitant spark , now no spark

the good news is the ignitions on the 250 400 and 500 are interchangeable for that year, expect to pay 75 to 100 for a good Motoplat mini-6 in those years

also MBZ makes a replacement new one you pay a little more but get more spark, downside no lighting coil, they are internal rotor like the CR type, had one gave it to my brother for his 87 430XC, nice upgrade but not cheap
