  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

modern forks for 87 xc

Husqvarna
A Class
Looking to pick up some modern forks for my 430 project. I have a few sets im watching. 01 husky 125cr and 94 husky te350 will these fit if I have triples and everything? I know motosportz had a pic posted of a sweet setup on his left kicker but I forget what 4 stroke they are from.......any kind of rule of thumb for what years or models fit? Any help would be great

oddly most anything newer save for the 91 92 which if you change the bearings will work, I plan to try an 04 front on my 87 430, also attempting to add the 94 rear wheel and brakes

It is soon to be 2014 I see 1994 and 2001 don't really count as modern in my opinion.

I searched my user name and forks. found this one I invested a bit of effort typing. http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/1993wxc-frontend-on-a-1987-wr.21908/#post-195234

Your 87 should fit wr and te of 2004 with a steel steering stem. The cr and soon I think they all had an aluminum stem which would mean bearing (cone, cup, and seal) You can go to the parts lists and figure out when wr and cr stopped having the same bearings if you want. To be honest I am just guessing the aluminum part because of other applications for those bearings that I have handled and were aluminum. The length of the steem can be an issue besides just the bearing though the one mentioned above will work fine. I have described how to go to 2004 ktm lately. How fussy are you about matching the trail? Husky doesn't make it as easy to know the offset of the triple clamps as say ktm. I can say a wr triple clamp, fork, axle, wheel, and brake set up of 2001 makes the trail virtually the same as the rubber bar mounted clamp, 40mm forks, wheel..... prior to the non rubber mounted one's offset you have.

modern is a relative term, when you consider that most 87 430's had 40mm conventional forks, 40mm inverted White Power were a huge improvement for tracking and eliminating fork walk, since they are rare and as such a bit more expensive they are not considered a perfect solution
92 is a more modern bike than an 87 so it is a relatively speaking more modern front end at 43mm and also inverted, that said an 01 is WAY modern in comparison
one of the biggest issues I see on swapping front ends is the steering stop issue, on the 87 they used frame stubs with plastic caps and if your triple clamp offset is different enough they could be an issue to deal with

Anything adjustable is modern as far as the bike knows. I like stock and have no problem with it Just want a project really and figured it might be worth it. So to be clear are you guys saying the 2001 cr forks I found will have the aluminium steering rod and need a jap bearing?

i think its safe to say any complete setup from the nineties, {except 91 and 92} will directly fit...may have to weld a tab on the front of the steering stem to have a steering stop but should be good to go...my 95 has the same bearing and all dimensions fit wise match up..the original stops on the frame may work or not...would have to try the fit before you powder coat..the stop would be easy to fit for anyone that could weld right..
there are models extending into the 2000s that fit as well but i would like to know how far it goes

This has been discussed and as mentioned by me prior what I have found at least as far as japanese stuff doesn't agree with others. The origional bearings say made in England don't they. I think the stem is one inch not 25mm. http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Bea...tml?feed=npn&gclid=CNHX8ci3srsCFYlhfgodMkkAMg If I recall there are at least four cups for that cone in the industrial world. I believe it is a matter of what series of bearing and then the bore not japanese vs something else. I put the cone and cup numbers in the post I linked above. I found the all balls website I can now see that that 2001 cr 125 my 1998 wr 125 (which swaps perfect) and the 2004 ktm 200exc which the bearing kit fits just a bit touchy on the stem length are all different. The cr husky bikes that have a different bearing seem to put 48 mm in the outside diameter not 50 but guys on ebay have listed the same bearing as the ktm one on ebay. Totally confusing probably. I could find a cup to fit the cone that goes with that cr2001 or make a spacing sleve If I wanted it bad enough. The wr clamps will work and should be plenty of them I think I have bought a couple off ebay for less than $50 delivered.

They have a mix and match feature on all balls but it doesn't work for me, it is hard to know when it is only the seal different for the kits. https://www.allballsracing.com/index.php/forkconversion use 1998 wr 125 as husqvarna drops of the list when you get this old.

I could note about the stering stops. Like my wr bikes 1998 and 2004 the steering stop is a tang on the frame in the center and lumps on the lower clamp. Even other frame mounted stops may not contact in the same place as the welded on little pipes with nylon inserts, or rubber ones of this section. The place the stop hits the clamp may be right next to the bolts that tighten it on the weak side. You have to accept in some instances if you crash hard enough the fork tube might be damaged. Not really pertinant to this section but I will put a link to a picture of what I had to do in one instance. http://www.frannyk.addr.com/cafehusky/custom.steering.stops.JPG

I guess I should have mentioned when I said cr forks I meant husky cr. Sorry thought it was implied since its a husky site.

I was discussing cr triple clamps and steering neck bearings of the Husqvarna variety. That little picture in post 7 is a print screen capture of the husqvarna cr/wr 125 2001 parts sheet. The w means wr and the c means cr. I do have cr (husky) forks 1999 era in 2002 wr clamps on one of my bikes I can start and ride. It is an 1982 ae frame, same steering neck as on an 87xc. The wheel axle and brakes came on the 1998 that had the conventional type forks. Post 1 is a bit vague as it is the triple clamp that needs to be fit to the bike.

I think your 2008 wr 250 has the 45mm forks. It is pretty easy to remove the brake from the handlebars and the forks from the clamps, unplug the odometer, and slide those parts into another set of clamps on another bike.

Later it appears that by 2008 the outside diameter of that bearing has changed to 50mm but the part number has remained the same. Kind of sad that husky must have had the ability to change the earlier sheets that get posted on line.
