• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New Husky owner, coil question

Husqvarna
Hi All,

Ive never owned a Husky and I really need some help! I picked up an 82 430 XC on a whim Sunday. Looks like it should be a fun bike.

I don't really know why, but it doesn't have spark at the plug wire.

If I hold the end of the kill switch wire while kicking I get current, but nothing at the coil. The coil does look like it's had heat damage, so I figure it needs replacing anyway.

My question is, am I looking in the right direction? And, are the coils from different years interchangeable? Mine is a 3 post red wire motoplat coil.

Also, what is the best place to find a replacement and what should I look to pay?

Thanks for any/all help! Hopefully I can help one of you all sometime, I'm sure this won't be my last question

Im slightly less new than you at this....
The Motoplat coil is 'intelligent' so its not interchangeable with any random coil.

This seems to be a pretty good site for testing your system....though I havent tried it yet.
http://motoplatrepair.tripod.com/ This guys name comes up regularly.
New coils are available....or there are complete replacment systems on the market also. I wont comment on the quality of the sources or systems as Ive not used either.....but Im sure someone will come along who knows.

Thank you. Looking at the Yankeetwin website he says there are only 2 types of motoplat coils. Red wire coils and black wire coils. He says the red wire coils work for all three stators. Does this mean I can get any red wire motoplat coil and it will work correctly on my 82 430 no matter what it came off of?

I recently bought the Penton Powerdynamo ignition system The quality of the parts seems very good and The install easy enough and it started right away. the lighting is very good and has a voltage regulator so no blown bulbs. I also felt the price was good considering if you travel to ride or compete and your bike wont run it's no happy ride home.

Thanks Drew, what kind of price are we talking? I haven't ridden a dirt bike in 15 years and am just looking to get this thing running so I can figure out what I really do want to do with it.

Yeah, I just took the kill switch off until I can figure out how to get spark at the plug, but thanks for the suggestion. That would have been awesome if that was all it was. I'm hoping a coil will cure my ills. Does that sound like the most likely culprit?

I'm really hoping someone can tell me if I can use a red plug wire motoplat coil from any Husqvarna on my bike? I could pick up a used one for $50 or so, and save maybe $400 on an ignition system.

Ok, so I just bought a red plug wire motoplat coil from a (supposedly) running 83 500. I'll plug it in next week when it gets here and let you guys know how it turns out.

Any input/advice in the meantime will be greatly appreciated. In the meantime I'll try to post a pic or two of my bike. It's kinda rough, but I didn't pay much.

houd-candle sparck -plug is bad ?!
sparck -plug NGK is bad ?
stop-engine in handelbars is bad !?
(but my english is bad !:D)

I understand what your saying ol mate ;) he has checked the kill switch, but there is still no juice at the plug lead:eek:

Thanks guys. I didn't have an ohmeter so I was kinda feeling it out. I've never used one and don't know anything about electronics. But, I went down to the local o'reillys and they let me borrow one.

The stator tested 19 ohms

The coil between the blades tested 35 ohms

But, between the ground and plug there was no reading at all

Sounds like the stator is borderline but should work and if the coil I have coming is good it should be a working ignition system, right?

Thanks for all your help!

Check your engine to frame grounding. You should show continuity between ignition plate and coil mounting plate. Check the contact between the front motor mount plates and the frame. Common spot to lose contact and start a wild electrical chase. Yes it may really be that simple...

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll break out the grinder tonight, make sure the coil ground plate is nice and clean and check out those motor mount contact too.

I should get the coil in tomorrow.

The guy who had the bike before me had the stator off and so I want to make sure the timing is set correctly.

I think I've got the timing set about 1/4 in. before TDC.

I found TDC using a depth gauge, marked the flywheel and case so I would have a reference point, lined up the pin holes in the flywheel and stator and rotated the whole assembly to approx 1/4in. before TDC.

Is this ok? Or should I advance it to within a couple millimeters?
