  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

New to me '08 SM510R cutting out at idle

Hi folks, this is my first post here on the site. Last Saturday, I bought a used '08 SM510R on craigslist. I went out to go look at it and everything seemed to check out and I was very impressed. Fired right up (cold start), idled for as long as I wanted it to, took it for a 10 minute ride through the guys neighborhood, let it idle some more. No problems. Purchased the bike and brought it home. For the rest of the weekend, I rode it around the neighborhood, started it, let it idle, etc. No problems.

I was away this week and couldn't get it registered until today. Once I got the plate, the first thing I did was go get some gas since I didn't really know how much was in it and I wanted to take it for a ride and not worry about running out. So I put in around 1.5 gallons of 93 grade to top off the tank. The previous owner mentioned he used 93 as well. I went back home, put my gear on and set out for my 17 mile loop. Before I went, I took the headlight plate off (4 rubber hooks that wrap around the fork tubes) to look at the wires coming out of the back of the Trail Tech Vapor (previous owner replaced faulty Husky dash with the Trail Tech) out of curiosity but I don't think anything got messed with or wires got disconnected. I also made sure that the radiator was full and that the reserve bottle was also about half full.

Once I got out on the road, all was great until I got to a long red light. The idle seemed to get slower and slower until the bike cut out. I restarted it and it fired right back up. But I had to keep the RPMs up a little bit while stopped, otherwise it would just happen again. Luckily I didn't encounter many more lights on the rest of the ride but I had to keep hit the throttle a little bit to prevent the bike from cutting out. It happened again when I was coming down a hill and I pulled in the clutch and rolled down the hill. Luckily I got it to start right back up right away.

Once I got home, I shut the bike off to let it cool down. Once it was cool, I tried to start it again, and it fired right up and idled for about 30 seconds and then died. So I got on the bike, started it, and slightly twisted the throttle to increase the RPMs to get it to keep running. Once I get going, it runs great. It just doesn't seem to want to idle, especially when cold. Another important thing to note is that on the trail tech vapor, there is a red light in the top right corner that comes on from time to time. The temperature reading on the display showed no higher than 94 degrees. I have yet to read into the manual, so I'm not sure exactly what that means or how it is set.

To summarize, the bike is an 08 SM510R with powerup kit (arrow exhaust, 02 sensor hole plugged, throttle stop, race mode, air filter mod - remapped with ibeat), K&N air filter, and trail tech vapor. Everything else seems to be stock. When I bought the bike, it idled and ran fine. When I brought it home, it idled and ran fine. Last weekend, I had it idling for a good 15 minutes. A week later after putting fresh gas in and running it a little harder on the street, it seems to cut out on the idle. I need to slightly twist the throttle to bring the RPMs up to maintain idle. However, aside from this, the bike runs great and has been a blast so far. This model has the EFI so I'm not really sure how to make adjustments being that I don't have the ibeat software. Should I check my battery? Check all wire connections? Look in to a power commander? I'm hoping that somehow magically I will start it up tomorrow and idle fine but I know that probably won't happen. So looking for some ideas. Thank you very much.

Well I did a little research in the manual and noticed the EFI model has an idle adjustment screw. It seemed like it was a bit loose so i gave it a half turn or so clockwise. Fired it up this morning and it idles like it should without cutting out. Not sure what the deal was. I read on a forum somewhere that the screw can have a tendency to vibrate loose. I don't think I'm getting an accurate reading on the trail tech either. It fluctuates between 800 RPM and 1700 just idling..

Unfortunately, I'm back with the same problems. Since posting this morning I haven't run the bike until tonight and it would cut out on the idle like it did yesterday. It doesn't seem like that idle screw does anything. I had it fully closed to fully open and the problems persisted. Now when I try to start the bike, i hear in the injector buzz and the starter goes for like half a second and then nothing... I can post a video tomorrow if that helps. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks

Update: I can get the bike to start, I think I just ran the battery down by constantly starting it in such a short period of time. I took the battery out and charged it. Shows 13.6 volts on the charger. Not sure if that is normal or not. The battery was at 53% when I put it on the charger. I will go out and get a new battery tomorrow just to be sure. I've heard a lot about bad cells and messing with the electrical system/ voltage.

I then took the tank off and looked at the fuel pump, which was pulled way out of place. I added 2 new wire ties so hopefully that will hold up. Going to get a new spark plug tomorrow. Hoping someone can chime in with some other ideas. Will update tomorrow.

Sounds like it's running rough. Check that there's not a vacuum cap on the side of the head instead of a bolt where the emissions have been blocked off. Check that the air boot to the head isn't cracked and also check the o-ring that seals it to the head. Possibly a bad battery? Fuel filter possibly blocked? Are the valves in spec? Clogged injector?
I'm not sure how the lean sensor affects the SMR's ECM since the TE doesn't have it. Maybe somebody else out here knows. How far is the nearest dealer that has I-beat?

Also, does the bike feel real jerky at very little throttle input when you take off. Wondering if your TPS somehow got out of whack. A couple years ago mine went haywire after changing the oil. The only thing I had did was hold the decomp lever in with the bike off and cycle the kickstarter to get some oil circulated before turning it on. When I tried starting the bike, I couldn't get it to idle without dying. I had to keep the revs up to keep it running. That was the hardest part because The bike needs to be 80F or 80C to get I-beat to even work. Once it was readjusted, hasn't been a problem since.

Yes, the bike is very jerky with little throttle when taking off. The nearest dealer with ibeat is 2 hours away. I have a JD tuner on the way, hopefully that will help with the adjustments and I will go to the dealer as a last resort.

The JD tuner isn't going to help if the TPS is out of adjustment. The previous owner of my SMR said "these bikes eats spark plugs". He changed it often. I would pass that info along as he put 7800 HARD miles on the bike without a single breakdown.

Ok, I don't have the iBeat cable but was able to borrow a copy of the disk. I have it installed on my Windows 7 machine and it says "Diagnostic Tool has not normally installed in this PC". Does anyone know if there are compatibility issues with Windows 7 and iBeat? If I can get it to work, I will order the cable from Semco separately.
