  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Noob question.... Map vs Tuner

AllmanFan

B Class
Please pardon my ignorance but can someone break down the difference between mapping and a tuner? When mapped is it possible to switch between map3 and stock setting or is one or the other? Same question with the tuner. Ready for more power on my te449 but not sure I am ready for a full on race bike all the time. Think I would like to be able to choose when I need it ( if that is even possible?) thanks

Mapping is when the map stored in the ECU is replaced with a different map. If you were to get MapIII loaded at Zip Ty you would still have the ability to switch between 2 settings with the under seat plug. So without the plug it will have a better rich map than stock. With the plug and Race Map II on the dash you will be enjoying the best map.

However that map was written with use by regular customers with the optional Akrapovic slip on (which we were not allowed to have here in the US) in mind so it's not that powerful. Adding a tuner will allow you to use the base map as a starting point to add or subtract fuel at different points of the power band.

A JD tuner will basically just stretch the abilities of MapIII and result in a noticeable improvement, but it's a matter of trial and error by the user to find the settings that work for you. If you were to go with a Power Commander, you can have whole programmed maps downloaded into it that can go from mild to wild based on which one you choose. You can also use a map switch with the PCV to switch between maps on the fly. Just keep in mind that with either tuner they are still piggy backed on top of the Map loaded into your ECU.

Thanks Huskynoobee! I like the idea of the map switch so I can change on the go. Where would someone look to get this set up? Is this something that zipty can do as he is relatively close to me? Thanks again for the detailed explanation!

Tinken can get you dialed top to bottom. He's quite the PCV guru. Get in touch with him and y'all can discuss what you're looking to achieve and he can make sure you get the right maps, whether you want/need autotune ability, etc. I have seen how he has his bike set up with the Map switch and it's pretty slick.

Tinken has been telling me for a while that I need one, but I've been farting around with the JD, and after several stalls in slow technical sections at the race last weekend, I think it's time for me to get er done.
