  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Not an oil thread

Hello. I'm new around here. Just got a new to me 06 510.
On some boards, asking a "what kind of oil" thread is akin to setting off an atom bomb so could someone kindly direct me to a thread of that nature? I'd certainly appreciate it.
I used the search function for "oil" and came up empty handed.

Thanks

The search needs at least 4 letters before it will give any results. Maybe sometime this year that can change to 3.

There is a Tag search for oil (a little obscure)
http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/tags.php?tag=Oil

And the last way to find things is google:
Oil Site:"cafehusky.com"

People usually do not get all that excited about what oil to use on this site, but will offer opinion when asked.

Ok thanks, the 3 letters in "oil" got me, aha.

So, if there's no need to tippytoe around an oil question,
what would you use?

I bought this bike for mostly dual-sport riding, casual trails and ocasional single track. An unhappy shoulder has retired me from hare scrambles and enduros. I'm an old fart and slow even when competitively riding.

This is my first modern 4 st. it's still a bit new to me.
Sorry for the dumb questions.
Wouldn't normally ask but the $16 a qt. motorex 5/60 oil has me doing some uncomfortable maintenance arithmetic.

Thanks

When I got my bike I bought a gallon of non-synthetic Motorex multigrade oil, when that ran out I started using some Motorex semi-synthetic 5-50W (something like that).

I recently bought another type (Rotella) made for diesels at wal mart as an experiment... but I'm not too sure about that oil being in my bike. If for no other reason the shifting is a bit notchy compared to the other oil I was using.

Some pretty knowledgeable experts recommend Spectro "OFF Road" 20-50, dino stuff for break-in (first 600 mi.) and semi-synthetic for after. Weight is dependent on where you ride.

Spectro "OFF Road" has mineral additives like zinc and phosphorus. They've been reduced in most oils. I'm not sure if Spectro had to state "Off Road" but I think that is the case, sort of like using lead in some race gas (only off road also). $8 a liter for either of these.

The rottella is what's in it right now, according to previous owners records. I'm glad to see others have tried it as well.
I don't plan on using the Rotella but at least I'm no longer horrified to learn it was in there.
FWIW, the dealer in Lebanon, MO told me today they use Kawasaki 4st racing oil 10w40 synthetic. I'm not sure how much difference there could be between a Kaw and Husky engine as far as oil needs go.
Looks like there are as many differing opinions about 4st oil as there were with the 2 strokes.
I figure the 4st oil has to work harder, thus my concern.

Glad we had this little talk, I feel much better now.
Thanks
